Alex Ovechkin's newest pieces of Stanley Cup Playoff memorabilia for his personal museum weren't part of his own championship run, but they did come from someone he admires.

The Washington Capitals captain received the stick and puck used by Darius Kasparaitis when he scored the game-winning goal for the Pittsburgh Penguins against the Buffalo Sabres in overtime of Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinals in 2001.

According to Ovechkin's post on Instagram, Kasparaitis had been trying to sell both the stick and puck from his famous goal that lifted Pittsburgh to the Eastern Conference Final. But Ovechkin, Kasparaitis' teammate for Russia at the 2006 Turin Olympics, requested the items for his museum of hockey memorabilia.

"I was trying to sell this stick, but … my friend who is still playing asked that I donate it to his museum," Kasparaitis said in the video shared to Instagram. "I'm a little sad of course, but this stick is more important to him than it is to me."

"It's [an] honor," Kasparaitis said in his post. "I hope he will catch The Great One."
