Tomas Hertl gets two goals in Sharks win

SAN JOSE -- Tomas Hertl and Joonas Donskoi each scored on the power play, and Martin Jones made 24 saves to help the San Jose Sharks defeat the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1 at SAP Center on Thursday.
Donskoi gave San Jose (5-3-0) a 1-0 lead at 12:59 of the first period when he scored his first goal of the season. Defenseman David Schlemko, who signed with San Jose as an unrestricted free agent on July 1, had the assist, his first point with the Sharks.

Hertl made it 2-0 at 12:05 of the third period, scoring his third goal of the season on a rebound with Blue Jackets defenseman Jack Johnson in the penalty box for tripping Sharks forward Patrick Marleau.
Columbus forward Scott Hartnell scored from close range on a rebound at 17:10 to cut San Jose's lead to 2-1.

Hertl scored an empty-net goal with 0.8 seconds left.
Donskoi and Hertl are part of the Sharks' second power-play unit, as is Schlemko, who had two assists.
"We wanted some power-play goals, and the nice thing here is, building off last year, we want two units that can go out there and score," Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said. "Right now, the 5-on-5 goals are hard to come by. We're creating chances, but the power play won us the game tonight."
Sergei Bobrovsky made 26 saves for the Blue Jackets (2-3-1).
Columbus entered the game with the NHL's top-ranked power play but went 0-for-3; San Jose was 2-for-2.
"They scored a couple of power-play goals, and I thought we had a couple of really good chances on our first PP of the game," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella said. [Bobrovsky] makes a couple of great saves early on, but that last one hurt. It was just a rebound."

The Sharks defeated the Blue Jackets for the second time this season, sweeping the season series.
The lighting system went out with 2:42 left in the second period, causing a delay. On-ice officials decided to go directly to the second intermission, giving the lights time to return to full power.
After the intermission, the remainder of the second period was played, and then the teams changed ends for the third period.
Sharks defenseman Brenden Dillon appeared to score at 6:18 of the third with a slap shot from just below the blue line, but the goal was disallowed after Tortorella challenged it and video review determined Sharks center Chris Tierney was offside on the play.

"There were a couple of things there out of our control, but I thought, considering that, we stuck with it and found a way," DeBoer said. "It was a hard game at ice level. They came to play."

Goal of the game

Donskoi beat Bobrovsky to his glove side with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle, but Schlemko made it possible with two strong plays. First, he stopped the puck along the left boards when the Blue Jackets tried to clear it, then he sent an accurate cross-ice pass to a wide-open Donskoi. "There was a big seam there," Schlemko said. "I got it to him. Good to see him be a shooter and get rewarded there."

Save of the game

With 1:38 left in the first period, Jones made a stellar save to preserve San Jose's 1-0 lead. Blue Jackets center William Karlsson deflected a shot in the left circle, angling the puck toward the crease, but Jones quickly reacted to make the save.

Unsung moment of the game

Sharks forward Joel Ward had a prime chance to increase San Jose's lead to 2-0 48 seconds into the second period when he had a breakaway, but Bobrovsky made a left-pad save.

Highlight of the game

Hertl used his size and skill to score on the power play in the third period. He established position in front of the crease, bodied Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski out of his way, and was in perfect position to score on the rebound after Bobrovsky made a save on defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic's shot.

The Sharks outshot their opponent for the seventh time in eight games. ... Blue Jackets left wing Boone Jenner moved from the fourth to the second line and had four shots, five hits and one blocked shot.
