CHI@NSH: Tolvanen nets Smith's feed for first goal

NASHVILLE -- Eeli Tolvanen scored his first NHL goal and had an assist in his season debut for the Nashville Predators, a 5-2 win against the Chicago Blackhawks at Bridgestone Arena on Saturday.

Nashville (18-8-1) leads the Western Conference with 37 points but lost its two previous games, each at home, including 3-0 to the Arizona Coyotes on Thursday.
"We didn't play well last game," Predators coach Peter Laviolette said. "So as always, we talk about things the next day. We address it. And to me, tonight is 100 percent on the players for their response, because you can talk about things and you can say things to get things moving back in the direction that you want them to move in, but that doesn't do it. That doesn't move the needle. And so for me, the leadership group and the players, it's all on them. That was a much, much better game."

The Blackhawks (9-13-5) have lost three straight and are 3-11-3 in their past 17 games.
"It wasn't a good start tonight," said Chicago defenseman Duncan Keith, who received a game misconduct, a 10-minute misconduct, an instigator minor and a fighting major at 7:18 of the first period with Nashville leading 3-0. "At the end of the day, you can talk and talk, but it's about actions, and we all have to be better. That's the bottom line."
Tolvanen was recalled from Milwaukee of the American Hockey League earlier in the day, along with forward Anthony Richard, who made his NHL debut.
"I was more comfortable," said Tolvanen, who played his fourth NHL game. "Like the game system and all the guys here and the coaching staff I kind of know. I've been playing two months in the AHL. I think it's helped me a lot [with] my defensive game and just overall being more comfortable out there."
Kevin Fiala gave the Predators a 1-0 lead 2:11 into the game when he scored on the rebound of a Matt Irwin shot from the point.
"We were attacking from the first second," Fiala said. "It's awesome to see. Everybody was ready to go."

Tolvanen made it 2-0 at 3:32 when he beat goalie Cam Ward with a backhand shot from the slot off a pass from Craig Smith.
"That's a goal I'm going to remember my whole life," Tolvanen said. "It was just a good experience, and it feels good."
Ryan Johansen scored 39 seconds later when he redirected a pass from Fiala to give Nashville a 3-0 lead at 4:11.
"It was exactly what we needed, and exactly how we had to come out of the gates," Johansen said. "Definitely a huge part in our win tonight."

CHI@NSH: Johansen scores, continues Preds' fast start

Brandon Saad scored shorthanded to get the Blackhawks to within 3-1 at 12:20, but Craig Smith scored on the power play at 13:35 to restore the three-goal lead for the Predators at 4-1.
Artem Anisimov beat goalie Pekka Rinne off a pass from Marcus Kruger to make it 4-2 at 13:16 of the second period.
Austin Watson scored an empty-net goal at 17:06 of the third period for the 5-2 final score.

They said it

"I don't know what to tell you. It's frustrating. We've got to be better. We know that. But we'll try and keep cracking down all of the little details." -- Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews
"I thought he moved through the game really well. I think when he gets those opportunities in front of the net like he did, he has the talent to deliver that shot. But I think the game itself, when it's not about that shot, the way it moves up and down the ice, the flow of the game, I thought that he looked more mature and more experienced on this rink with less time and less space and worked harder in the areas that he needed to. So to me, he looked better and different than he did in training camp." -- Predators coach Peter Laviolette on rookie forward Eeli Tolvanen
