Montreal took a 6-0 lead on goals by Brian Flynn (2:56), Max Pacioretty (5:13), Artturi Lehkonen (7:12), Pacioretty (8:13), Paul Byron (8:41) and Flynn (13:47).
Tomas Plekanec and Sven Andrighetto each had two assists. Thirteen Canadiens had at least one point.
Montreal led 6-1 at the end of the period. Blake Comeau scored for Colorado with 13 seconds remaining.
The Canadiens hold the NHL record for most goals in a first period; they scored eight at the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 7, 1922, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
