McAvoy scores late in OT, Bruins top Flames to extend winning streak to 8

CALGARY --Linus Ullmark made an NHL career-high 54 saves, and Charlie McAvoy scored with 4.3 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Tuesday.

Brad Marchand won a puck battle behind the net and passed out to Patrice Bergeron, who quickly fed McAvoy for a shot past the outstretched stick of Jacob Markstrom.
"When I came in here (to the dressing room) I asked how much time was left because it was such a heads-up play by 'Bergy' to pass that puck to me," McAvoy said. "In a situation like that, sometimes you're thinking about the clock, but he was able to make the extra pass there."

Dmitry Orlov had two goals and an assist for the Bruins (47-8-5), who extended their winning streak to a season-high eight games.
"It's a process, there's no doubt," Boston defenseman Hampus Lindholm said. "We always know we have a chance to win the hockey game. It's not always pretty. It doesn't always go your way. This was one of those nights. Linus played big for us. Kept us in it. We can come out and get a win for him in the end. For us all in here it shows a lot of character."
Blake Coleman, Dillon Dube and Jonathan Huberdeau scored for the Flames (27-21-13), who have lost three in a row (0-1-2) and four of five (1-2-2). Dan Vladar allowed two goals on five shots before being replaced at the start of the second period by Markstrom, who made 13 saves.
"At this point in the year we're scrambling for our lives," Calgary defenseman Nikita Zadorov said. "We're still fighting. We're going to fight until the end. It's a grown man league … you can't feel sorry for yourself. You just got to go out there and play hockey and compete and put all your effort into it."

Orlov gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at 4:47 of the first period, skating through the neutral zone before shooting blocker side from high slot between four defenders. He extended the lead to 2-0 at 13:39 with a slap shot from above the right circle off a face-off win by Bergeron.
Orlov has five points (two goals, three assists) in three games since being acquired from the Washington Capitals in a three-team trade on Feb. 23.
Coleman pulled the Flames to within 2-1 at 1:07 of the second period with a shot past Ullmark's blocker from the slot.
Ullmark then made a blocker save on Mikael Backlund's short-handed breakaway at 6:10, and Milan Lucic hit the post off a return pass from Walker Duehr at 9:05.
Calgary outshot Boston 20-4 in the second period.
"What a game by [Ullmark]. What a game by him," McAvoy said. "The shots were obviously a lot to a little there, and he kept us in the game all night. He gave us a chance to ultimately get a win at the end like he has all season long. Running out of stuff to say about him. It's just amazing. Feel very fortunate to play in front of him."

Dube tied it 2-2 at 8:16 of the third period with a shot from the left hash marks off a cross-ice saucer pass from Tyler Toffoli.
Huberdeau put Calgary in front 3-2 at 9:33 when his no-look pass from the top of the crease deflected in off the skate of Derek Forbort.
"We stuck with it," Huberdeau said. "I think we were playing well. We deserved to come back in this game, which we did. We just have to (stick with it). I think it's happened too many times this year (trailing in the third period). That's the kind of stuff we need to figure out."
Pavel Zacha tied it 3-3 at 14:07 when he tapped in a backdoor pass from Orlov on a power play.
"In games likes these especially, there's a lot of emotion, fatigue," McAvoy said. "You're up 2-1 and it's emotional. You know you're not playing well and kind of hanging on a little bit. Then it's 2-2, then it's 3-2, and we still find a way to come back like we have all year. You can take a lot of confidence from games like those."

NOTES:McAvoy's goal was the latest in overtime in Bruins history since the five-minute format was introduced in 2005-06. … Boston is 31-0-3 when scoring first, and 33-0-2 when leading after two periods. ... Calgary is 0-14-3 when trailing after two periods. ... Flames forward Nazem Kadri had an assist in 18:56 of ice time in his 800th NHL game. ...
