The Winnipeg Jets drafted the super-talented Patrik Laine in the 2016 NHL Draft second in the first round, with high expectations. The Tampere, Finland native met all the expectations right away. The sniper had a superb rookie season, and he was nominated for the Calder Trophy as the best rookie in the NHL. Now the Jets' #29 is in his second season, and we have a chance to follow him very closely. Laine (44G-26A, 70 points) is the first European-born player to reach the 70-point mark in one season as a teenager. He was second in scoring in the League after Washington Capitals' Alexander Ovechkin and first in power play goals (20).
I'm happy with my points in the regular season, even though they could have been better. Second place in scoring is a disappointment, naturally, especially because I had a chance to grab the title but couldn't do it. But I have to say second place is not so bad.
Laine's Blog - Part 6
Our team had an incredible regular season, and now we go full steam ahead. We're in a great place now. We were able to collect 114 points, which is pretty amazing knowing how many injuries consumed our team. Our defensive play was great, and our goalie was able to carry us when needed, and he gave us some huge wins. I think those two things, in part, explain our success. Our great goaltending didn't surprise us this year. It was great last season, but we didn't support the goalie, whomever was between the pipes. This year we did.
My family arrived from Finland a couple of days ago, and they are excited to see my games live. As for me, I'm more than excited, even though I'm not exactly sure what to expect. I have been in the playoffs before, but not in the NHL. Can't wait for the puck to drop. All the preparations for any playoff game will be exactly the same as during the regular season. Well, maybe the level of intensity is higher, but other than that it's just the same.
I really enjoy the great and relaxed feeling we have in our room. We won 11 of the last 12 games, and that was a huge boost to our confidence. And just knowing we didn't need to go home after the regular season and watch other guys play, that alone makes us so happy and excited. We get to play the best games of the season. I have no personal goals in the playoffs; I just wish I'm able to bring my best game and help my team to win. That's all.
I'll turn 20 on April 19th. We won't play that day, so maybe I can have some cake. Assuming someone will bake a cake. I know I won't. I can have a piece of cake or something sweet every now and then, my diet is not that strict. I haven't had a birthday party in years, so I'm not gonna celebrate this year either.
Minnesota is a very skilled and hard-working team, and they have a bunch of great players. They are a great challenge for us. I think special teams will make the difference in this series, and not many games will be decided when playing 5-on-5. Hopefully our penalty kill works and we won't allow shorthanded goals. What I'd like to see is some power-play goals by us.
When I was younger, I really enjoyed watching playoff series between Washington and Pittsburgh. They were two of my favorite teams, and seeing Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin play, man, that was huge. Those series always had a special kind of feeling, totally different from the others. And now, it's possible I may play against either one of those teams and those great players in these playoffs. That would be amazing. We'll see what happens.
I've been occupied with my own team and things going on in Winnipeg, but never too busy to keep an eye on Tappara. My old team is doing so well, and they will play in the finals of the Finnish League for the sixth time in a row. Go for it, and bring the trophy home.

Winnipeg Jets varasi superlahjakkaan Patrik Laineen vuoden 2016 NHL Draftin ensimmäisen kierroksen toisena pelaajana kovin odotuksin. Tampereelta taalajäille ponnistanut maalitykki loisti tulokaskaudellaan ja nappasi Calder Trophy -ehdokkuuden. Nyt Jetsin numero 29 aloittaa toisen NHL-kautensa, ja saamme seurata sen etenemistä todella läheltä. Siinä varmaan pari selitystä sille, minkä takia pärjättiin ja menestyttiin niin hyvin. Kyllä me tiedettiin, että meillä on hyvät veskarit. Viime kaudellakin veskarit pelasi hyvin, mutta silloin me ei annettu omalla pelaamisella tukea.
Perhe tuli Suomesta pari päivää sitten ja pääsee nyt sitten katsomaan pelejä. Olen tosi innoissani, vaikka en oikein tiedäkään mitä odottaa, kun en ole aikaisemmin pelannut näitä pleijareita. Odotan vaan, että pääsen pelaamaan. Valmistautuminen on ihan samanlaista kuin runkosarjan peleihin, tai no, ehkä latausta on vähän enemmän, mutta muuten kaikki tehdään samalla lailla.
Meillä on kopissa hyvä fiilis. Saatiin kahdestatoista viime pelistä yksitoista voittoa, ja sen ansiosta itseluottamus on korkealla. Muutenkin fiilis on innostunut, kun kenenkään ei tarvinnut lähteä kotiin runkosarjan jälkeen. Saadaan vielä jatkaa näitä parhaita pelejä. Ei mulla ole mitään henkilökohtaisia tavoitteita pleijareissa. Kunhan vaan pystyisi pelaamaan hyvin ja auttamaan joukkuetta voittamaan. Ei meikäläisellä muuta.
Parikymmentä vuotta tulee täyteen 19. päivä. Hyvä kun ei ole peliä sinä päivänä, niin voi vaikka syödä kakkua. En kyllä aio itse leipoa, mutta katsotaan, leipooko joku muu. Aina joskus voi syödä vähän herkkuja, ei se niin tiukkaa ole. Synttäreitä ei ole juhlittu moneen vuoteen, joten en meinaa sen kummemmin juhlia nytkään.
Nyt keskitytään ensimmäiseen matsiin Minnesotaa vastaan, mutta ei tässä sen enempää aleta katsoa otteluohjelmaa eteenpäin. Mennään peli ja päivä kerrallaan, ei kannata ruveta murehtimaan sen enempää.
Minnesota on taitava ja kovasti töitä tekevä joukkue, ja siellä on tosi paljon hyviä pelaajia. Hyvä haaste meille. Erikoistilanteet on tärkeitä, sillä kovinkaan moni peli ei varmaan ratkea 5-5 -tilanteissa. Veikkaan, että monet ottelut ratkeaa erikoistilanteissa. Toivottavasti saadaan pidettyä maali puhtaana alivoimalla ja sitten ylivoimalla tehtyä tärkeitä maaleja.
