Oliver Wahlstrom scored the lone goal for the Islanders in the third period with his power-play goal. Ilya Sorokin made his second-straight start and made 24 saves on 29 shots in the loss.
Sam Bennett scored three times, while Anthony Duclair and Aleksander Barkov also found the back of the net. Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves on 29 shots for the Panthers.
THE SCORING:
First Period:
9:10 - FLA 1, NYI 0 - Sam Bennett opened up scoring for the Panthers as he buried a rebound from Ilya Sorokin on the backdoor. Radko Gudas and Gustav Forsling received the assists.
Second Period:
3:48 - FLA 2, NYI 0 - Sam Bennett doubled Florida's lead up 2-0 as he beat Sorokin with a wraparound. Jonathan Huberdeau and Aaron Ekblad picked up the assists.
18:57 - FLA 3, NYI 0 - Anthony Duclair extends the Panthers' lead up to 3-0 as he sprung for a breakaway and beat Sorokin. Mackenzie Weegar picked up the sole assist on the play.
Third Period:
3:30 - FLA 3, NYI 1, PPG - Oliver Wahlstrom gets the Islanders on the board as he scored his first goal of the season and also first on the power play. The goal was unassisted.
9:39 - FLA 4, NYI 1 - Sam Bennett completes the hat trick for Florida as he scored his third goal of the game to increase the Panthers' lead to 4-1. Bennett beat Sorokin with a shot from the high slot. Matt Kierstad earned the sole assist.
12:22 - FLA 5, NYI 1 - Aleksander Barkov extended Florida's lead 5-1. Carter Verhaeghe and Gustav Forsling assisted on the goal.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
The Islanders went 1-for-4 on the power play and went 1-for-1 on the penalty kill, while the Panthers finished the game with a 0-for-1 showing on the power play and a 3-for-4 performance on the penalty kill.
GOALTENDING BATTLE:
Ilya Sorokin made 24 saves on 29 shots for the Islanders, while his fellow countryman Sergei Bobrovsky made 28 saves on 29 shots for Florida.
NOTEBOOK:
Leo Komarov made his season debut and joined the lineup in place of Ross Johnston. The winger totaled 10:48 time on ice, had three hits, and took one penalty... The Islanders had a second-period goal overturned that would have made the score 2-1. Ryan Pulock scored from a long-range shot, but upon review - and a Florida challenge - the officials confirmed that it was not a goal goal because Anders Lee was ruled to have interfered with Bobrovsky. Lee and Radko Gudas were both received a penalty for interference… Wahlstrom's third-period power-play goal was his first of the season and also the first power-play goal for the Islanders this season… Ilya Sorokin made his second-straight start in net…
