A sixth-round pick (No. 180) by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2006 NHL Draft, Komarov played parts of five seasons with Dynamo Moscow of the Kontinental Hockey League before becoming a regular with the Maple Leafs in 2013-14.
Komarov, who has played for Finland at the Olympics, World Championship and World Cup of Hockey, made his NHL debut against the Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 19, 2013. He got his first NHL point with an assist 10 days later at the Buffalo Sabres and scored his first goal Feb. 9, 2013, against Montreal.

In 2015-16, Komarov established NHL career highs with 19 goals and 36 points and represented the Maple Leafs at the NHL All-Star Game.
After two more seasons with Toronto, Komarov became an unrestricted free agent and signed a four-year contract with the Islanders on July 1, 2018. He played all 82 games in his first season with New York and had 26 points (six goals, 20 assists), helping it reach the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Komarov had 14 points (four goals, 10 assists) in 48 games when the 2019-20 season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
