At the tail end of three games in four nights, the New York Islanders saved their best for last.
Down 3-1 entering the third period, the Islanders scored four times in the final frame, upending the defending Stanley Cup champions 5-4.
The third period rally was apart of five straight goals for the Islanders, who won their third straight game in the process. Noah Dobson, Zach Parise, Scott Mayfield, Anthony Beauviller and Brock Nelson (ENG) scored for the Islanders, as 12 different players hit the scoresheet.
Evan Rodrigues (2G, 1A), Mikko Rantanen and Alex Newhook scored for the Avalanche.

1st Period:
No scoring.
2nd Period:
0:46 - COL 1, NYI 0 PPG - Evan Rodrigues opens the scoring with a power-play goal, one-timing a feed from Rantanen.
7:28 - COL 2, NYI 0 - After a flurry of chances in front of the Avalanche net, Noah Dobson's shot is blocked by Josh Manson and Colorado goes back the other way. Manson springs Mikko Rantanen for a breakaway and he beats Semyon Varlamov with a shot glove side.
8:33 - COL 3, NYI 0 - Rodrigues deflects a Nathan MacKinnon shot down off the ice where it hops over Varlamov's pad for his second goal of the game. Devon Toews picks up the secondary assist.
9:53 - COL 3, NYI 1- Noah Dobson blasts a slap shot past Alexandar Georgiev to put the Islanders on the board. Alexander Romanov and Oliver Wahlstrom with the assists.
3rd Period:
3:35 - COL 3, NYI 2 - Zach Parise jams away at a puck in Georgiev's pads and it eventually tickles over the line. JG Pageau also jams away at the puck and picks up the primary assist, while Ryan Pulock, who put a point shot on net, earns the secondary helper.
10:39 - NYI 3, COL 3 - Mathew Barzal circles the zone during some sustained pressure by the Islanders. Barzal collects his own rebound, keeps skating and eventually finds Scott Mayfield for a backdoor tap-in.
10:56 - NYI 4, COL 3 - Anthony Beauvillier streaks down the left side and snaps a shot past Georgiev. Anders Lee with the assist.
18:39 - NYI 5, COL 3 - Brock Nelson scored an empty-netter to put the Islanders ahead 5-3. Nelson capitalized after Cale Makar's stick broke.
19:30 - NYI 5, COL 4 - The Avalanche make it interesting, as Alex Newhook makes it 5-4. Rodrigues and Cale Makar with the assists.

The Islanders allowed their first power-play goal of the season on Saturday, snapping a streak of 28 consecutive kills to start a season. That was an Islanders franchise record. Additionally, the Islanders set an NHL record by going eight games to start a season without allowing a power-play goal... The Islanders' 17 third period goals lead the NHL... Scott Mayfield led the Islanders with 21:49 TOI... Zach Parise had nine shots on goal... Noah Dobson had 10 shot attempts (5 SOG, 2 A/B, 3 MS)... The Islanders outhit the Avalanche 26-21.
