Rapid Recap: Avalanche 5, Islanders 3

The New York Islanders five-game road trip ended with a 5-3 loss to the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday night at Ball Arena.
Ryan Pulock, JG Pageau and Kyle Palmieri scored for the Islanders, who finish their road trip with a 2-2-1 record.
The Islanders led 3-2 heading into the third period, but three-straight goals from Gabriel Landeskog, Andre Burakovsky and Erik Johnson (ENG) propelled the Avalanche to the comeback win. Nathan MacKinnon and former Islander Devon Toews (1G, 2A) also scored for Colorado.

THE SCORING
1st Period:
3:32 - COL 1, NYI 0 - Nathan MacKinnon wrists a shot past Ilya Sorokin from the high slot, using Scott Mayfield as a screen. Cale Makar and former Islander Devon Toews pick up the assists.
10:03 - NYI 1, COL 1 - Ryan Pulock scores his first goal of the season, beating a screened Darcy Kuemper with a wrist shot from the point. The goal comes just as an Islanders power play expired. Zach Parise and Oliver Wahlstrom with the assists.
2nd Period:
3:54 - COL 2, NYI 1 - Toews scores his 10th goal of the season, skating into the slot and beating Sorokin with a wrister. Andre Burakovsky and Makar with the assists.
4:39 - NYI 2, COL 2 - JG Pageau gets it back for the Islanders quickly, stepping into a loose puck after a centering feed from Parise gets through a Colorado defender. The assist is Parise's second primary helper, while Cal Clutterbuck picks up the secondary assist.
12:23 - NYI 3, COL 2 - Kyle Palmieri posts up in front of the net, spins off a Nathan MacKinnon check and knocks in an Andy Greene rebound. pageau picks up the secondary assist.
3rd Period:
4:43 - NYI 3, COL 3 PPG - Gabriel Landeskog banks a shot off Ilya Sorokin and in after the puck kicks off the end wall. Nazem Kadri and Toews with the assists.
12:48 - COL 4, NYI 3 - Burakovsky puts Colorado ahead just after an Islanders goal is disallowed. Kadri keeps the puck in on an Islanders clear and sends a pass across the slot. Burakovsky's shot deflects off Greene and past Sorokin.
19:17 - COL 5, NYI 3 - Erik Johnson seals it with a long-range empty-netter.

NOTEBOOK:
Pageau extended his point streak to three games with four points (2G, 2A) over that span... Parise recorded his fourth multi-point game of the season... Palmieri has five goals in seven games since returning to the lineup... Anthony Beauvillier had a team-high six shots on goal... Scott Mayfield had a team-high 21:25 TOI and blocked a team-high four shots... The Avalanche picked up their 40th win of the season in their 54th game...
GOALTENDING MATCHUP:
Ilya Sorokin stopped 39 of 43 in the loss.
Darcy Keumper stopped 28 of 31 in the win.
SPECIAL TEAMS:
The Islanders went 0-for-2 on the power play and 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
