NYI Recap: Islanders couldn't solve Blackwood in loss

      SPECIAL TEAMS SINK ISLANDERS:

Special teams hurt the Islanders at both ends on Thursday night, as the team gave up a power play and a shorthanded goal.
The shorthanded goal was the second the Islanders had allowed this season, after allowing zero in the previous, albeit-shortened, season.

"Tonight wasn't a good night for us," Brock Nelson said of the team's power play. "You want to try and generate momentum at the very least and we kind of killed it today."
PK Subban scooped up a Ryan Pulock turnover in the defensive zone, drawing Sorokin far out of his crease for a pad save. Unfortunately for the Islanders, the sequence didn't end there, with the rebound finding Nico Hischier, who dished over to Kuokkanen for the game's first goal. Kuokkanen's goal was his fourth in eight career games against the Islanders.
That wasn't the only hairy moment for the man advantage, as the Islanders turned the puck over at their blueline on their second power play, resulting in a quality chance the other way.
An Oliver Wahlstrom tripping penalty negated the last two seconds of the Islanders third power play, which sent the Devils to the man advantage at the end of the period. The Islanders caught a pair of bad breaks shorthanded, first having the play whistled dead due to a clock issue after winning a face-off. Shortly after, an Islanders clearing attempt caromed off a Devils skate and stayed in the zone, setting off a sequence that ultimately led to Dougie Hamilton's point shot deflecting off Tatar and in.
"It's decisions and execution plain and simple," Head Coach Barry Trotz said. "To me, that's where it starts. We're coming down, we have to make a play through someone, we don't make it. We have to make a play through someone, which you're going to have to do sometimes and we throw it at someone's feet. Little things like that. Guys want to be on the power play, but we've got four power play goals and we've given up two. We're plus-two in that area. That's not good enough."

NYI@NJD: Sorokin makes pad save on Tatar

SOROKIN STILL LOOKS SOLID IN LOSS:

The boxscore betrayed Sorokin's night, as the Islanders goalie faced a host of high-danger chances from an uncharacteristically leaky Islanders team in front of him. The first period was a sign of things to come in the run-and-gun game, as Sorokin was called upon to stop Alexander Holtz on a two-on-one, as well as Mercer on a breakaway.
Sorokin made the first save - and a good one - on Subban in the slot on Kuokkanen's goal, but there was little he could do about rebound. Prior to Tatar's off-the-leg deflection in the second period, Sorokin laid out to rob Tatar on a chance in alone.
Trailing 2-0 entering the third, the Islanders were forced to open up further, which led to Mercer's breakaway that the rookie slipped into Sorokin's five-hole. Mercer's goal proved to be a backbreaker, though Hamilton added one for good measure.
Sorokin finished the night with 30 saves on 34 shots, but he kept the Islanders in the game through 40 minutes on a night the score could have easily been run up.
"Their goaltender was first star, our goaltender was second star," Trotz said.

          ISLES CAN'T SOLVE BLACKWOOD:

While the Islanders didn't find the back of the net on Thursday it certainly wasn't for lack of trying.
The Islanders peppered Mackenzie Blackwood with a season-high 42 shots, but the Devils goalie held firm for his first shutout of the season.
The Islanders had some quality chances early, including a Mat Barzal breakaway in the first period. Zach Parise, who had a team-high tying five shots on goal, came close to his first of the season as an Islander in the first period and Kyle Palmieri had a quality couple of looks around the net in the second period.
"We didn't have enough people on the rope today," Trotz said. "I thought Kyle Palmieri was probably our best forward. He had lots of chances, but didn't bury. We did enough to generate a goal or two, but didn't find the back of the net, but have to be a little harder there."
While 42 shots were a season high, New Jersey blocked an additional 23 Islanders attempts. For a team that usually chooses quality over quality, it was a kitchen-sink game for the Islanders, who threw 78 shot attempts at the Devils net, compared to 56 for New Jersey.
"You have to give them credit on the chances we did have," captain Anders Lee said. "They did a good job collapsing and obviously their goaltender had a great game."

          NEXT GAME:

The Islanders have three days off before a back-to-back set in Florida, starting on Monday night against Tampa Bay with a rematch against the Stanley Cup champions. Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
