Taking care of business.
Saturday proved to be a big day for the Flames, not only did they do their part by topping the San Jose Sharks 5-3, but they also got some help on the out of town scoreboard.
MacKenzie Weegar, Tyler Toffoli, Walker Duehr and Nazem Kadri all scored for the Flames, with Toffoli tallying twice to now tie his career high in goals with 31. Jacob Markstrom was steady, making key saves all afternoon to help the Flames pick up the important W.
"Lots of momentum swings," Weegar said after the game. "I thought our start was great, came out with a lot of pace and lots of intensity. Kinda sat back a bit, second period I thought they took it to us a little bit … Walker played a great game, Naz scored a big goal and Marky stood tall for us."
"Games this time of year are going to be tight, going to be tough. I thought everyone stayed composed and we got a good win."
With the win and the Jets dropping a 4-1 decision in Hollywood that same afternoon, the Flames are back within five points of overtaking the final wildcard spot in the West.
But now its about putting that one in the rear view mirror and focus on the next task, the same Kings squad that left them with a sour taste after their last meeting in a 8-2 LA win.
And at this time, the message going around the locker-room is simple.
Just win.
"We've been in this position for a long time," Mikael Backlund said. "We just need to keep going at it. We talk about it lots. All the guys talk about it every day. We know what we gotta do, we gotta win a lot of games in a row if not all of them. We know that.
"But we have to focus on the next game, one game at a time. Last game in LA was embarrassing and we gotta show we are a lot better than that."
There might not be a hotter team in the NHL right now than the Kings.
To say they have been rolling is an understatement, with a franchise record 12-game point streak headed into tonight's clash.
Last outing was a wild one, holding off the St. Louis Blues for a 7-6 final. After jumping out to a 5-1 lead after the first 20, things got interesting with the Blues scoring three times in the middle frame to cut the deficit to just one headed into the third.
The final stanza was a back-and-forth affair with the clubs trading goals but in the end, the Kings were able to withstand the late push for their third straight win.
"We were able to get to a young goaltender, and it came real fast," Kings coach Todd McLellan told NHL.com. "Nothing ever comes easy in this league, but the power play was clicking. Everything felt good, and then we played like it felt good instead of playing our game, and that's when it changed."
"You got to win in different ways even when you're not playing your best, which was evident tonight. The power play came through."
The Kings continue to stay in the tight race for first in the Pacific Division, sitting just two points back of Vegas.
Eight of their last nine games on the regular season sked come against divisional opponents, with a date against the Golden Knights on April 6 that could very well determine who earns that coveted top spot.
HOLY TOFFOLI: Tyler Toffoli had a pair of goals on Saturday, scoring his 30th and 31st of the season, marking the second time Toffoli has reached the 30-goal mark in his career. With his 31st goal of the season, Toffoli has now tied his career-high in goals from the 2015-16 season and is already having a career-year in points (67) with is previous best also coming during the 2015-16 season (58). Toffoli's multi-goal effort also tied him for the most multi-goal games since joining the Flames midway through last season (7), joining Elias Lindholm, Andrew Mangiapane, and Johnny Gaudreau.
NEW KID IN TOWN: The Flames announced Sunday the signing of their 2021 first-round pick forward Matthew Coronato to a three-year entry-level contract. Coronato just finished his second season with Harvard University, where he netted 20 goals and 16 assists for 36 points in 34 games. The Greenlawn, NY native was coming off an Ivy League Rookie of the Year campaign in 2021-22, and his 20 goals were tied for the second-most on Harvard through 2022-23. Coronato finished eighth in points in the ECAC this season and second in goals-per-game with a conference-leading five game-winning goals. He was also named to the Second Team All-ECAC roster.

"It's really exciting to be here"

Flames - Walker Duehr
The kid continues to provide a spark!
Duehr scored a goal and added an assist against San Jose for the second two-point game of his career and was providing energy each time he hit the ice. On the year, the speedy winger now has five goals and nine points and has four points in his last five games.
Kings - Adrian Kempe
Kempe continues to light it up.
The Swede has enjoyed a career year, setting new highs with 36 goals and 58 points so far. In his last three games, Kempe has collected six points, including a three-point performance against the Flames on March 20.
Tonight the Flames will host Pride Night at the 'Dome and will wear special warm-up jerseys designed by local artist Megan Parker. The jerseys will be signed and auctioned off to support the CSEC Inclusion Program.
