NEWARK, NJ -In a game full of special teams play, the Devils battled back from multiple deficits to secure a win against their rivals the Philadelphia Flyers. Pavel Zacha and Kyle Palmieri each had two goals in the win, while Zacha, Miles Wood and Jesper Bratt all contributed three points in the win.
"Obviously it's really nice to get the win and to contribute," said Kyle Palmieri following the team's 8-6 win over the Flyers. "The two points and beating the division rival, it's always fun."
The Devils went on the power play just 38 seconds in to the game. The Flyers challenged the Devils on the man-advantage, but the Devils were able to connect with some close chances on net. The Devils were unable to score.
Special teams action continued 3 minutes later when Travis Zajac was sent to the box for two minutes for hooking. The Devils had several huge clears during the Flyers power play, limiting their offensive possession time. Even with the strong defensive play, the Flyers score with their man-advantage with Jakub Voracek's goal.

The Devils went back on the power play once again a minute and a half after Philadelphia's goal. The Devils had some consistent time offensively during the power play but the Flyers penalty kill kept the Devils off the board.
Miles Wood got the Devils on the board halfway through the first period. After after Hischier won the face-off and got the puck to Mueller at the point, Mueller found Wood in the opposite face-off circle. Wood shot and got past Philadelphia's goaltender.
Sean Couturier scored less than a minute later to make it 2-1 Philadelphia. Couturier was sitting on the doorstep and went backhand to allow Philadelphia to respond to New Jersey's goal.
With six minutes left in the first period, a fight broke out with Kevin Rooney and Nicolas Aube-Kubel were both sent to the box five minutes for fighting.
Nico Hischier was called for hooking with just over a minute left in the first period. The Devils penalty kill kept the Flyers from scoring during their power play in the first period, but the Flyers would have 52 seconds left on the power play at the start of the second period.
At the end of the first period the Devils trailed the Flyers 2-1. The Flyers outshot the Devils 31-20 after 20 minutes. Both teams had a fighting major, and two minor penalties for a busy special teams period.
The Devils killed off the rest of their penalty from the first period, and even strength play resumed after the first minute of the second period.
There was another fight, this time four and a half minutes into the second period. Matt Tennyson and Michael Raffl dropped gloves and then were both sent to the box for a fighting major.
Halfway through the second period, the Devils got another opportunity on the power play when Joel Farabee was sent to the box for tripping. Although the Flyers were strong during their penalty kill, Pavel Zacha scored to tie up the game and got the Devils their first power play goal of the game. Miles Wood's initial shot was saved but Zacha was there to put away the rebound.
Cory Schneider was strong against Philadelphia's offensive surge right after the Devils second goal. About two minutes after Zacha's goal, the Devils started to find their offensive momentum again, and Nikita Gusev pots one to give the Devils a 3-2 lead. Jesper Bratt brings the puck into the Devils offensive zone, passed to Gusev. Gusev throws a shot on goal, and after going off a Flyers defenseman, the shot goes in.
20 seconds later, the Devils get their third straight goal, with Pavel Zacha scoring his second of the game. The devils win the face off, pass the puck around, a feed down low to Bratt is then passed to Zacha in the high slot. Zacha hammers it home against Philadelphia's goaltender to make it 4-2 Devils.
In the final 40 seconds of the second period, Travis Zajac is called for tripping putting the Devils on the penalty kill. New Jersey is able to keep the Flyers from scoring during the first 40 minutes of their power play as the second period ends. The Devils will have another 1:20 of man-down time at the start of the third period.
During the second period, the Devils were outshot 36-20 by their opponents. Each team had one minor and one major penalty in the second period.
The Devils faced more penalty trouble at the start of the third period. Five seconds in to the third period, Michael McLeod was called for tripping, giving the Flyers a 5-on-3 advantage for over a minute. Nicolas Aube-Kubel is able to score during Philadelphia's 5-on-3 advantage, making it 4-3 Devils.
The Flyers score at the end of their final power play in the series of penalties the Devils had at the start of the third period, when Jakub Voracek scored his second of the game. Three minutes into the third period the game was tied at 4.
Voracek's third goal of the game came several minutes later when he was able to bury his own rebound. Voracek's goal put Philadelphia up 5-4 five minutes in to the third period. Following the goal, the Flyers had a flurry of shots on Schneider but the Devils goaltender remained strong against them.
With twelve minutes left in regulation, Kyle Palmieri started a Devils comeback. Nico Hischier's initial shot bounced off the Flyers goaltender and popped out to Palmieri. Palmieri's quick reaction and shot allowed him to catch the goaltender out of position and score on a slightly open net.
The game remained tied for an extended period of time during the third period. The final six minutes of the period would be filled with goals. First, Palmieri scored his second of the night to put the Devils ahead. Palmieri beat his defender in the corner, skated up and fired a shot on net.
Seconds later, Jesper Bratt would score the Devils third straight goal. Bratt, in the low slot was able to score five hole through traffic. The Devils two goal lead would only last for about a minute as Kevin Hayes scored to make it 7-6 Devils.
With 3:18 left in the third period, PK Subban is called for tripping. During the penalty kill, Cory Schneider is strong against the Flyers offensive efforts, especially under a couple grade-A chances by Philadelphia. The Devils are able to kill off the penalty, going back to even strength. Then seconds after the Devils return to even strength, Hischier is called for hooking. With 1:12 left in regulation, the Devils will be a man-down for the remainder of the third period.
New Jersey was strong on the penalty kill, clearing it several times. Philadelphia pulled their goalie with 40 seconds left in the game. Jack Hughes sends the puck from the Flyers offensive zone, and scored an empty-net shorthanded goal in the process. The Flyers brought back their goalie, and although on the man-advantage, Philadelphia was unable to score again. The Devils win 8-6 against the Flyers.
Cory Schneider stopped 107 of the 113 shots he faced in the game. The Devils scored on one of their three power play opportunities. The Devils penalty kill faced seven man-down situations and allowed the Flyers to score on three of those opportunities.
"I think it's good for the goalies, it keeps them warm, they don't have too much time to sit back there and relax," said Palmieri. "Both our goalies are very vocal, they've said plenty and we're sick of hearing it. Good to get the win and they've been rock solid back there."
It was a balanced scoring effort for the Devils as eleven players were on the scoresheet in the win. Pavel Zacha, Miles Wood and Jesper Bratt all had three points in the win. Zacha had two goals and one assist while Bratt and Wood each had one goal and two assists. Kyle Palmieri contributed two goals. Nikita Gusev had a goal and an assist while Jack Hughes had a shorthanded empty net goal at the end of the game. Nico Hischier contributed two assists, while PK Subban, Damon Severson, Mirco Mueller, and Matt Tennyson all had one helper.
It will be a quick turnaround for the Devils as they host the Carolina Hurricanes Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. ET at Prudential Center.
