Gusev was selected by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the seventh round (No. 202) of the 2012 NHL Draft but played the following seven seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League.
The Vegas Golden Knights made arrangements to select Lightning defenseman Jason Garrison at the 2017 Expansion Draft. By doing so, they also received Gusev's NHL rights.

Gusev never played a game for the Golden Knights and was traded to the Devils on July 29, 2019. He signed a two-year, $9 million contract the same day.
Gusev scored 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists) in 66 games with New Jersey before the NHL paused the 2019-20 season on March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
On the international stage, Gusev represented Russia at the 2012 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2018 PyeongChang Olympics.
