The Devils power play had their first opportunity three minutes into the game but were unable to increase their lead. Then with eight minutes left in the first period, the Devils penalty kill had their first opportunity of the night, when Kevin Rooney was sent to the box for hooking. The penalty kill came up strong and the Devils continued to lead 2-0.
With just under five minutes left in the period, the Devils scored once again, this time Travis Zajac.
With 48 seconds left in the first period, the Devils power play had their second chance of the game. The Devils did not score before the end of the period and would start the second period on the power play for an additional 1:12. At the end of the first period, Cory Schneider stopped all 31 shots he faced, while the Devils were able to put 24 shots on net. Both teams were even with face-off wins, winning 15 each.
The Devils power play went to work at the start of the second period but were unable to capitalize on the man advantage. Towards the end of the power play, Kyle Palmieri was called for hooking, making it 4-on-4 play for 17 seconds, and then an Islanders power play for 1:43. The Islanders were able to convert on the man-advantage, getting their first goal of the night on the power play.
Miles Wood would respond quickly for the Devils, scoring 19 seconds after the Islanders goal. Kyle Palmieri, fresh out of the box, saw Wood and fed it to him. Wood skated to find room and scored, making it 4-1 Devils.
The Islanders would cut the visitors lead once again when Derick Brassard scored five minutes into the period, making it 4-2 Devils.
Halfway through the second period, the Devils power play had a chance again, but did not score on the man-advantage. New Jersey did score with 6:26 left in the second period when Kevin Rooney made it 5-2 Devils. Rooney cut in front, got the rebound of a blocked shot and scored.
The 5-2 score held for the rest of the second period, a period which both team had two goals each. The Islanders were able to convert on one of their two power plays and the Devils saw three man-advantage opportunities, but were unable to score on any.
The third period was all Islanders goals, with the home team scoring 3 goals to tie the game and send it to overtime. Early in the second period, Joey Anderson was called for tripping and the Devils penalty kill unit came out for the third time. The penalty kill unit remained strong and held the Islanders from scoring during the special teams action.
Anders Lee started the scoring for the Islanders with just over ten minutes left in the third period. Then five minutes later, Anthony Beauvillier scored, bringing the score to 5-4. Both teams would go on the power play in the final ten minutes of regulation, but neither team was able to score in the man-up situation. Then, with 51 seconds left in the game, Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored to tie up the game 5-5. Neither team was able to score in the final minute, sending the game to overtime.
It wouldn't take long for the game to be decided in the 3-on-3 overtime period. Jack Hughes was left open in front, and Hughes scores with his top corner goal. The Devils win their final game of the simulated season on the road against the Islanders, 6-5.
Six Devils players had multi-point games with Kyle Palmieri (0-2, 2), Nico Hischier (1-1, 2), Miles Wood (1-1, 2), John Hayden (0-2, 2), Jack Hughes (1-1, 2) and Nikita Gusev (0-2, 2) all tied with two points on the night. An additional six players had points in the overtime win. Cory Schneider stopped 86 of the 91 shots he faced on net throughout the three regulation periods and the overtime period.
