Hayden played two seasons with the United States National Team Development Program and was selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the third round (No. 74) of the 2013 NHL Draft.
After being drafted, Hayden played four seasons at Yale University. He was team captain during his senior year (2016-17) and scored 34 points (21 goals, 13 assists) in 33 games. He signed a two-year contract with the Blackhawks on March 15, 2017.

Hayden scored his first NHL goal against the Toronto Maple Leafs three days later and finished the season with four points (one goal, three assists) in 12 games. He split the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons between the Blackhawks and Rockford of the American Hockey League.
Hayden played the entire 2018-19 season with the Blackhawks and scored five points (three goals, two assists) in 54 games.
He was traded to the Devils on June 22, 2019.
