A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Carrick played two seasons with USA Hockey's National Team Development Program and was selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round (No. 137) of the 2012 NHL Draft.
After scoring 44 points (12 goals, 32 assists) in 68 games with Plymouth of the Ontario Hockey League, he signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Capitals on Sept. 23, 2013. He split the season between the Capitals and Hershey of the American Hockey League and scored six points (one goal, five assists) in 34 NHL games.

He played all of the 2014-15 season in the AHL and was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Feb. 28, 2016. He finished the regular season in the NHL and was then sent to Toronto of the AHL, where he scored 18 points (seven goals, 11 assists) in 15 Calder Cup Playoff games.
Carrick played the next two seasons with the Maple Leafs but was traded to the Dallas Stars on Oct. 1, 2018. He scored four points (one goal, three assists) in 14 games and was again traded, this time to the Devils, on Feb. 23, 2019. Carrick finished the season with New Jersey and scored seven points (one goal, six assists) in 20 games.
He had six points (one goal, five assists) in 29 games for the Devils when the 2019-20 season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
On the international stage, Carrick helped the United States win the 2012 Under-18 World Championship and also represented his country at the 2014 IIHF World Junior Championship.
