PRE-GAME STORY

KANATA, ON - After a full practice on Monday, and with back-to-back games over the weekend, the Devils heled an optional morning skate Tuesday morning in Ottawa. Head coach Lindy Ruff joined the media with a few notables for tonight's matchup…
On illness updates:
"Nico (Hischier) is still not well. We have other players that are battling and will be game-time decisions."
On defenseman Reilly Walsh, who was recalled this morning:
"He's a guy that we want to see play. He's had a good year down in Utica. A lot of these young guys are getting an opportunity to play right now … His puck-moving ability is something we want to see. He's a guy, first pass has been good."
On Blackwood's first start since Jan. 19:
"We're looking for him to play a solid game for us. He's had a lot of great practice reps. Obviously, practice isn't like a game. You almost treat this as him entering a preseason game for us, coming out of camp. I'd like to see our team play well in front of him, get him into a game, where he gets to feel the puck and maybe some opportunities he sees earlier are opportunities he's able to front and not the real difficult type."
On winning without Hischier and Jack Hughes:
"It's a real good test for the team. It's a great opportunity for players that want that quality ice time. If you take a look at some of the centers whose ice time has increased, it's their opportunity to jump into that spot and make things happen offensively."
On Hammond getting free McDonald's hamburgers in Ottawa:
"If he does, I'm going with him."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (27-44-8) at SENATORS (31-41-7)
TV:7:00 PM ET on MSG+
Radio: Listen on Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head:
This is the third and final game between the Senators and Devils this season after playing in February and December. Ottawa has won both meetings this season, 4-1 on Feb. 7 and 3-2 on Dec. 6. Two of the three meetings this season are in Ottawa.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils are coming off a 0-2-1 homestand where New Jersey lost 5-2 to the Sabres on Apr 21, 3-2 in overtime to the Hurricanes on Apr 23, and 3-0 to the Red Wings on Apr 24. New Jersey has struggled with some puck play problems which have led to several of those losses. In addition, players and coaches have commented how the tough travel schedule with a five-game, 12 day trip has taken away a lot of the team's energy. Currently, the Devils are in the middle of six games in nine days to close out the 2021-22 season.
Over the Devils' weekend back-to-back, New Jersey had several players out with illness and Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said several players are still suffering from this sickness on Monday. Defenseman P.K. Subban and Nico Hischier did not practice on Monday due to a non-COVID related illness. Jesper Bratt, the team's assist (45) and points (70) leader, missed Saturday's game due to illness and was still under the weather during the Sunday matinee; however, Bratt did play against the Red Wings.
In addition, the Devils have been hit with injuries this season with key players like leading scorer Jack Hughes, top defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler, and forward Miles Wood out for the rest of the season. Forward Jimmy Vesey who hasn't played since Apr. 5 due to a lower body injury, is traveling with the team and joined Monday's practice before the flight to Ottawa.
Before Sunday's game against the Red Wings, Coach Ruff announced that goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood, who hasn't played since Jan. 19 with a heel injury, is expected to make his return on Tuesday in Ottawa. Through the 23 games the netminder has played, Blackwood has a 3.29 goals against average and .894 save percentage. However, the goaltender was playing through his injury for the majority of his games this season.
Senators Team Scope:
The Senators are coming into today's game with two days off from games and riding a three-game winning streak. Over the last 10 games played, Ottawa has come out 5-4-1 with wins over Detroit, Boston, Vancouver, Columbus and Montreal. The Canadian club also picked up one point in an overtime loss to the Maple Leafs.
On Monday, the Senators announced that right wing Connor Brown would miss the remainder of the season. Brown finishes the year with 10 goals and 29 assists for 39 points through 64 games. Although Brown is out, defenseman Thomas Chabot returned to the lineup in the Seantors last game after missing 18 games due to a fractured hand.
Ottawa's Captain Brady Tkachuk leads his club with 62 points, 11 more points than the next points scorer on the team. Tkachuk is also tied with Tim Stutzle for most assists on the team with 33. Josh Norris lead the Senators with 34 goals and Norris is tied with Stutzle for second most points with 53.
Anton Forsberg has started 42 games this season for Ottawa and has played in 42. He has a 20-17-4 record while averaging 2.82 goals against average and a .917 save percentage. Matt Murray, the other half of the Senators goaltender tandem has started 20 games and is 5-12-2 with a 3.05 goals against average and a .906 save percentage.
By the Numbers:
Devils goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood started in one of the two games against the Senators this season, playing in the Devils home game on Dec. 6. In that contest, Blackwood had 23 saves on 25 shots and got the win.
Senators goaltender Anton Forsberg recently appeared in his 100th NHL game and in the contest recorded 44 saves to get the win. It was the netminder's 20th win in the 2021-22 campaign.
