Drouin

MONTREAL - The Canadiens held a morning skate at the Bell Sports Complex on Sunday.

Following the on-ice session, forwards Jonathan Drouin, Paul Byron and Jake Evans met the media.
They were followed at the podium by head coach Claude Julien.
Here are a few highlights from their Zoom-based Q&A with reporters:
Drouin on the chemistry that continues to build between him and Nick Suzuki as training camp rolls on:
There's still a lot of chemistry there. It will carry over into games. I'm not worried about that at all, especially with a guy like Josh Anderson on our line. I like the way things have been going during practices. We just have to bring that into games like we did during the playoffs.

Drouin on his role with the team this season

Drouin on the incredible depth the Canadiens have at their disposal heading into the season:
It's a good problem to have. We have a lot of depth and a lot of players who can play different positions. I'm not a coach, but if that was the case, I'd like to have that issue. We have a lot of options. You can change your lineup every game. We added big players. Corey Perry can score big goals for us, even if he plays limited minutes. He's a player with a lot of experience and he's a great addition for our young players in the locker room. We added a lot of good pieces. We're a team that likes to use all four lines. I think we have four lines that can score and defend. We're really excited about it.
Byron on his fourth-line role right now playing alongside Evans and Artturi Lehkonen:
I think it's my fifth training camp in Montreal. Every year, I start on the fourth line. I'm a player who can be used on different lines and in every game situation. I'm going to focus on my game. I skate fast, and I'm good on the forecheck and the penalty kill. I just want to do my best when the coaching staff gives me an opportunity. Playing on the fourth line doesn't change anything for me.

Byron on the team's potential this season

Byron on the reasons why he believes the Canadiens can go far this year:
We have the best goaltender in the world. We have very good lines and defensive duos. I think our young players did well in the playoffs last summer. Suzuki, Kotkaniemi and Drouin continue to develop. We have a lot of offensive players who are still very young. We also added some good pieces. It'll be fun. I think our team has a lot of potential. I'm very confident and convinced that we can do good things this year.
Evans on playing against the top line during the club's first intra-squad game last week:
I think it was a great experience, a great opportunity for me to go against those guys. For me, it's just about gaining confidence, and when you get to go against some of the top players and keep up with them and feel good about yourself, I think that's great for me and great experience for me.

Evans on the identity of the fourth line

Evans on the offensive goals of his line going forward:
With the speed we have and forcing turnovers and just being hard to play against, I think we'll create a lot of opportunities. We won't be getting those fancier goals as some lines, but I think we'll be such a hard line to play against and we can frustrate teams and create a lot of opportunities from that.
Asked whether he believes Byron can reach the 20-goal plateau for the third time in his NHL career this season, Julien responded:
We hope so. His speed generates a lot of scoring chances. We also know that he capitalizes on those chances often. It would definitely be an asset to see Paul fully healthy this season and giving us the kinds of goals we know he can score.

Julien on the roster decisions to be made

With respect to Drouin's consistency, Julien offered up the following thoughts:
I think it's more a question of him staying healthy. He had a really good start to the season last year before being injured. If he wasn't injured, would we have seen the Jonathan Drouin that everyone was hoping to see from the start? We hope to see that this season. We've liked his play at camp. He's been good since the very first day. We hope that he'll stay healthy so he can play the same way he did in the playoffs.
