RED WINGS The Detroit Red Wings didn't quit when the Columbus Blue Jackets led 5-1 in the second period on Monday at Little Caesars Arena. Detroit pushed and scored four more goals but eventually fell 7-5 to the Blue Jackets.
Anthony Mantha had two goals and an assist, and Jimmy Howard gave up three goals on 16 shots before being replaced by Jonathan Bernier in the game.
The loss was the Red Wings' third straight.
"I don't think we competed hard enough and we didn't execute when we had chances in the first period," Red Wings Head Coach Jeff Blashill told NHL.com. "I thought we played well enough to win our last two games. We deserved to lose this one."
Detroit is 10-11-3 this season, which ranks sixth in the Atlantic Division.
HEAD-TO-HEAD Wednesday's game will be the first of two matchups between the Blues and Red Wings this season. The second meeting is March 21 at Enterprise Center.
Wednesday's game is the 284th regular-season meeting between the teams, the Blues' third-most against any Eastern Conference team.
Last season, the Blues were 2-0-0 against the Red Wings, outscoring Detroit 8-2. The Blues have points in eight straight games against Detroit (4-0-4), which includes a three-game win streak.
