SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The National Hockey League's (NHL) Minnesota Wild today announced that the organization has installed a new Meyer Sound system at Xcel Energy Center. Built around PANTHER large-scale linear line array loudspeakers, the new system will be used for the first time on Tuesday, Nov. 1 when the Wild hosts the Montreal Canadians at 7 p.m. The Wild is the first professional sports team anywhere to equip its home arena with PANTHER line arrays, and the system at Xcel Energy Center is to date the largest permanent PANTHER installation anywhere in the world.

"We are extremely excited to become the first professional sports team to equip its venue with Meyer Sound's new PANTHER system," said Minnesota Wild President Matt Majka. "The system at Xcel Energy Center features the industry's latest technology and is the largest permanent PANTHER installation in the world. We look forward to unveiling our new, state-of-the-art sound system for our great fans at tonight's game."
The new Meyer Sound system features 96 PANTHER loudspeakers, 22 1100-LFC low frequency control elements (subwoofers) for the main audience coverage system, augmented by 14 Meyer Sound LEOPARD line array loudspeakers used to direct sound onto the ice surface for the players. The new Meyer Sound system will be used for Wild games and all other non-concert events at Xcel Energy Center; it will not be used for concerts as technical requirements differ for each production and most artists travel with their own touring sound systems.
The new Meyer Sound system will greatly enhance the fan experience at Wild games. It allows for sound to be evenly distributed throughout Xcel Energy Center, with greater speech intelligibility as well as an enhanced bass response for sound effects, incidental music, and video soundtracks. The system can be segmented to activate arrays only for specific areas of the arena for partial occupancy events, and the new amplifiers use far less electricity. In addition, as part of the Wild's continued sustainability efforts, the original Xcel Energy Center sound system will be recycled or repurposed.
Only introduced earlier this year, Meyer Sound PANTHER systems already have toured with Ed Sheeran, Michael Bublé and Dead & Company, and have powered the sound of major summer music festivals from Switzerland to San Francisco. As with all Meyer Sound loudspeakers, PANTHER is a self-powered system with amplifiers and digital processing built into the loudspeaker cabinet.
"Meyer Sound loudspeaker systems have been used in sports venues for many years, and we're excited to see PANTHER at Xcel Energy Center," said John Monitto, Meyer Sound's director of business development. "The systems are designed to provide highly intelligible sound so fans can hear the announcers and official's calls clearly, even at high points of the game with peak crowd noise. These systems also provide high impact music for generating fan excitement."
Introduced in early 2022, the
PANTHER
linear line array loudspeaker is engineered to meet rapidly evolving demands for large-scale touring and installed systems. Today's complex and visually focused production scenarios, coupled with tighter safety regulations, often restrict the space and weight allowed for loudspeakers. In addition, new AV systems increasingly are based around a networked signal infrastructure. Responding to these demands, PANTHER delivers an acoustic output of more than 150 dB SPL yet weighs just 150 lbs. and has substantially lower energy use compared to earlier generations of line array loudspeakers. A dual input module with both analog and Milan AVB network inputs allows integration with new digital signal networks but with backward compatibility for integration into existing analog infrastructure.
