For 55 minutes Saturday afternoon the Dallas Stars played a solid road game. Then it all fell apart. The Philadelphia Flyers scored two power-play goals in a span of 93 seconds late in the game to erase a 2-1 Dallas lead and went on to defeat the Stars, 4-2, at Wells Fargo Center.
"Good power play over there. We knew that," said Stars forward Tyler Seguin. "We knew we could play well 5-on-5 and we did, and we lost it on penalties."
The Flyers, who came into the game with the league's second-ranked power play, were 3-6 with the man-advantage while the Stars were 0-4.
"We knew we had to stay out of the penalty box and when we took that last one we put ourselves in a bad place," said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. "We talked about it before the game, and if you are going to be careless, it is going to cost you."
And it did cost the Stars, who allowed only 15 shots on goal during five-on-five play. But it was a different story on special teams, where the Flyers made the most of their opportunities and won the game.
Stars rookie Devin Shore's second goal of the game, a rebound off his own shot, gave the Stars a 2-1 lead with 9:28 remaining in the third period. But the Flyers went on a power play with 4:54 left when Stars defenseman Jamie Oleksiak was called for cross checking. Less than a minute after Stars forward Radek Faksa hit the post on a shorthanded chance, Philadelphia's Brayden Schenn, who scored three times on the power play, redirected a Jakub Voracek pass into the net to tie the game 2-2 with 3:48 left.
Just 51 seconds later, the Flyers went on the power play again after Seguin was called for high sticking. Schenn struck again for his third power-play goal of the game, putting home a rebound to give the Flyers a 3-2 lead with 2:15 left. Voracek sealed the win with an empty-net goal.
"When needed, the PP was difference tonight," Flyers coach Dave Hakstol said. "And, that's what made the difference in getting the two points tonight."

The Stars, coming off an impressive 5-2 win over Nashville Thursday, continue to struggle to string together wins. They have won consecutive games just once this season and fell to 1-7-3 in games following a win.
Schenn scored three power-play goals and Voracek recorded one goal and three assists for the Flyers, who won their eighth straight game and improved to 17-10-3. The eight-game winning streak is the longest for Philadelphia since 2002.
"I think if you look over the past eight or nine games or whatever we've had a no-quit attitude the whole way, so this afternoon is no different," Schenn said. "When you're only down by one goal you can make it happen there in that last five or ten minutes and we did tonight."
The Stars took the lead 7:30 into the first period. The fourth line of Dallas pinned the Flyers in their own end, and Shore finished off the sequence by backhanding the puck into the net from close range.
The Flyers answered late in the period on the second of back-to-back penalties. Voracek put a shot on net from the right circle, and Schenn tipped it past Stars goaltender Kari Lehtonen to make it a 1-1 game at 17:18 of the first.
There was no scoring in the second, and both goaltenders had big stops. Philadelphia's Steve Mason turned away a Seguin shot from the slot, and Lehtonen made a nice pad save on a Dale Weise point-blank shot with Philadelphia on the power play.
That sent the game to the third, where Lehtonen made the save of the night, making a great glove stop on Ivan Provorov just as a Philadelphia power play was expiring. Shore gave the Stars the lead midway through the third, but Philadelphia rallied to win on special teams play.
Obviously, their three power-play goals were the difference," Shore said. "It's unfortunate because it was something we talked about before the game and our scouting report was right, but you can take positives from the 5-on-5 and learn from your mistakes. They did a good job on their power play, and that was the difference."
