Jeff Skinner scored the lone goal for the Buffalo Sabres in a 3-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens inside KeyBank Center on Monday.

The Sabres outshot the Canadiens 37-26 but fell behind when Brendan Gallagher drove to the blue paint and poked a loose puck in from under the glove of goaltender Eric Comrie 3:31 into the third period.

Jake Allen made 36 saves for the Canadiens, who also received goals from Justin Barron and Tanner Pearson.

Eric Comrie made 23 saves for the Sabres.

GOAL SUMMARY

Period 1, 2:56 – Justin Barron from Arber Xhekaj and Sean Monahan (1-0, MTL)

Mattias Samuelsson blocked the initial shot by Arber Xhekaj from the point but Justin Barron recovered the rebound and sniped a shot past Comrie to put the Canadiens on the board first.

Period 1, 7:13 (PP) – Jeff Skinner from Dylan Cozens and Rasmus Dahlin (1-1)

Skinner picked the near-side corner of the net as the puck went off the crossbar and in on the power play.

Period 3, 3:31 – Brendan Gallagher from David Savard and Tanner Pearson (2-1, MTL)

Gallagher went to the net and poked the puck from under Comrie to give the Canadiens the lead early in the third.

Period 3, 16:53 (PP) - Tanner Pearson from Brendan Gallagher and Alex Newhook (3-1, MTL)

Pearson buried a one-timer with four seconds remaining on a cross-checking penalty against Alex Tuch.
