Fisher_close_1

What a lightning bolt. As big as the news was back in 2011 when Mike Fisher was traded to the Nashville Predators, Wednesday's announcement that he would come out of retirement and join the team for the stretch run was even bigger. That is a tribute both to his impact on the franchise and to the evolution of Smashville to new heights since that day.
In 2011, the infamous headline was "Carrie Underwood's Husband Traded to Preds." At the time, only the seasoned hockey fans knew that he was an impact player. But even those of us who knew about the solid career numbers he had posted in Ottawa had no idea the full effect he would have on the franchise and the community. Back then, Nashville knew about Underwood (who has been a fantastic catalyst for the team in her own way). Now, they know about Fisher. He is flat out special.
General manager David Poile and head coach Peter Laviolette know that as well. Which is why it was fascinating to hear them (along with Fisher himself) articulate the process of the former captain's
decision to return
at the press conference. Poile joined Flagship Station 102.5 The Game afterward for more insight.
I invite you to listen to the segment in its entirety. But while you do, here are some key things to ponder:

Roman Josi's Role:
Poile called his current captain the "most important person" during the process, which started back "around Christmastime," and wasn't final until "probably Monday." Toward the end of our interview, hear Poile articulate how Laviolette's approach to Fisher was extremely well handled.

What Will This Mike Fisher Look Like?
Poile goes into detail on the intangible value of Fisher, and just how much he impacted last year's team, which he led in hits and face-off winning percentage. Plus, he led the forwards in shorthanded time on ice per game, and tied for the most power-play goals with seven. As Laviolette has often said, he "checks all of the boxes" on a list of needs for a team.
His role will most likely change in some way, but he is more than capable in upgrading any number of areas. As Poile puts it, he can "add a layer" to an already formidable team.
February 26 is the Key Date:
As of now, Fisher is not signed to a contract even though he is practicing with the team. He must come to an agreement prior to Feb. 26 if he is to be eligible to play going forward. Poile left the possibility open that Fisher could be ready before that. But he will presumably be signed close to that date (not after) with roughly a quarter of the season remaining.
How Will it Affect Other Players?
While the players "all have big smiles on their faces today" knowing that Fisher is returning, it will affect the role of some of the forwards. Playing time will be reduced for some, and it will relegate somebody to the bench. But Poile points out how important depth was last season, in which the team used 17 forwards during the playoff run, and that he has to believe the Predators have "the right character people" who understand this what it takes to achieve the ultimate goal.

Are the Preds Finished Adding Players?
Poile did not rule out adding another player heading up to the Feb. 26 Trade Deadline. He said merely that Fisher gives him "flexibility," meaning that if he didn't see a deal he liked, he wouldn't feel too much pressure to have to add anyone. That said, if the right player were to become available (a winger perhaps?), Poile still has the tools to make a move.
There is Still Cap Space:
Poile mentioned that because of Fisher's unique situation, "this is not about money." Clearly, it's about taking one more shot at winning the Stanley Cup - so likely this will be a team-friendly deal. While Poile wouldn't disclose specifically what Fisher will make yet (the contract hasn't been signed yet remember), it will be a one-year deal. And because he won't start counting against the salary cap until later this month, Poile will still have a large portion of his cap space budget ("more than a lot of teams" as he told us). He could still add another sizable contract should he choose to make a trade.
