Inside The Oilers Blog
"Everybody came to play tonight," said Mark Letestu, who scored a goal in his 500th career NHL game. "All four lines showed up on the scoresheet, I don't think we gave up a lot. It was more like ourselves. There was a lot to prove tonight. St. Louis wasn't the game that any of us wanted to put out there. I think this was the response we needed."
Oilers head coach Todd McLellan was very pleased with the effort put forth by his crew.
"We played the type of game that it takes to win in the League. We made plays when they were there. We managed the puck and chipped it out when the plays weren't there. We had good shift length and good line changes, we blocked shots," McLellan began.
"We were responsible all over the rink and it took everybody. It's a good lesson for us. We want to bottle that up and use it in Buffalo on Friday."
The Oilers bench boss added that it was nice to see scoring from so many different sources.
"They didn't have to score two or three to win," he said about McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. "Quite often, when your secondary level of player is contributing offensively you have a real good chance at winning. All four lines found a way to contribute, not only on the scoresheet but doing things right all over the ice surface."
Scoring came early in this one. Not too long after Pat Maroon took the game's first penalty, Tomas Tatar one-timed a blast from the right circle high past Talbot for the power play marker, putting Detroit on the board first.
Exactly one minute later, the Oilers got that goal back. Darnell Nurse's wrist shot from the point beat Howard through a screen, fooling the Wings netminder who likely couldn't see the puck with Milan Lucic standing in front.
"It shows what we're capable of," said Nurse when asked about the team getting secondary scoring tonight. "For us, it's got to continue to fuel our fire. We know the way we can play and games like this need to come more often."

Just over two minutes after the Nurse goal, the Oilers took the lead. Maroon received a feed in front from Leon Draisaitl and made a nice deke play to slip the puck between the legs of Howard to make it 2-1.
With 5:43 to play in the first, Jujhar Khaira got called for tripping while the Red Wings buzzed around the Edmonton zone, giving the dangerous Detroit power play another chance but the Oilers were able to kill it off.
With 95 seconds to play in the opening frame, Niklas Kronwall's shot from the side boards hit Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on its way to the net and then somehow found its way past Talbot to get the game back on even terms.
After one period, shots on goal were 11-8 for the Red Wings.
Edmonton started the second period on fire, outshooting the Red Wings 6-0 through the first nine minutes. Eventually, they were able to convert on their chances with Khaira creating a turnover along the side boards and then stationing himself in front of the net where he picked up the puck and fired it past Howard for the goal, putting the Oilers back in front 3-2.

Nearly four minutes later, Letestu scored, driving the net and banging home a Michael Cammalleri rebound past Howard to double Edmonton's lead to 4-2. It was Cammalleri's first point as an Oiler.
After the goal, Petr Mrazek replaced Howard in net for the Red Wings. Howard had stopped 15 of 19 shots up to that point.
Jonathan Ericsson received two minutes for interference to give Edmonton its first power play of the night but the Red Wings killed it off effectively. However, Drake Caggiula tapped in a nice backhand feed from McDavid to put the Oilers up by three with 1:44 to play in the second.
Shots in the middle frame were 14-3 for the Oilers; 22-14 overall in the game.
With 1:05 left in the third, Jesse Puljujarvi ripped a one timer past Mrazek to make it a four-goal gap.
Shots in the third period were 8-6 for the Red Wings and overall in the game, the Oilers outshot the home team 28-22.
