VAN@MTL: Toffoli roofs game-winning goal in OT

MONTREAL --Tyler Toffoli scored at 1:35 of overtime to give the Vancouver Canucks a come-from-behind 4-3 win against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Tuesday.

The Canucks fell behind 2-0 in the first period and 3-2 after tying it in the second.
Jake Virtanen tied the game 3-3 when he scored Vancouver's second power-play goal of the game at 5:53 of the third period.

Toffoli won it with his third goal in two games on a pass from Bo Horvat with Montreal defenseman Jeff Petry and forwards Max Domi and Paul Byron stuck on the ice for all of overtime.
"We knew they were tired, so just obviously making those little plays, moving around, and trying to get them to chase us when they're that tired," Toffoli said. "I didn't know if he was going to pass or not, but obviously I was waiting there, and Bo made a really nice play."
Thatcher Demko made 37 saves in his second start in four games for Vancouver (34-22-6), which has won two games in a row and is 4-1-1 in its past six. The Canucks are tied with the Edmonton Oilers for second place in the Pacific Division, two points behind the Vegas Golden Knights.
"We had a little bit of a slow start, but we pulled together as a group and just kind of chipped away," Demko said. "And then we're down again in the third, and we find a way to tie it up and then eventually win it in overtime. So a good way to start the road trip, and hopefully we can have some better starts."

VAN@MTL: Virtanen nets wrist shot for power-play goal

Jacob Markstrom, Vancouver's No. 1 goalie, is out because of a lower-body injury he sustained during a 9-3 win against the Boston Bruins on Saturday.
Carey Price made 30 saves in his 10th straight start for Montreal (29-27-9), which is 2-4-2 in its past eight games.
"He gives us that every night," Canadiens forward Brendan Gallagher said. "That's what he is, that's what he does. Regardless of the situation, he's going to compete."
Byron scored for the second straight game to give Montreal a 1-0 lead at 5:59 of the first.
Shea Weber made it 2-0 at 7:23 when he scored his 15th goal on a slap shot from the point.

Horvat got the Canucks within 2-1 with a power-play goal at 15:57. Quinn Hughes got his 42nd assist on the goal to become the first rookie to reach 50 points in the NHL this season.
"It was one of those nights where we needed our power play to get a goal or two, and they did," Vancouver coach Travis Green said. "When you're on the road and you get behind, you're probably going to have to win the special-team game if you want to come back, and our power play really helped us and got the job done tonight."

Alexander Edler tied it 2-2 at 15:36 of the second with a wrist shot from the left point through traffic.
Jordan Weal put the Canadiens ahead 3-2 50 seconds into the third when he scored on a shot from the slot.
"When it gets to overtime, anything can happen," said Domi, who had two assists. "And it's unfortunate, we got caught out there for a little too long. And when that happens, it's a matter of just staying with your guy, and sometimes your brain slips or your legs slip, whatever it might be, and then you've got to find a way to buckle down. But it's unfortunate how that one ended tonight."

They said it

"You're not always going to go out and get the lead. But I didn't think we were on top of our game the first eight minutes. I thought we found our game the last 12 of the first. We fought the puck a little bit most of the night, I thought, but we found a way to get a win." -- Canucks coach Travis Green
"That's a good hockey team over there. I think we worked hard all game, we played more or less a full 60 (minutes) as a group. We had everyone going, and it's tough. Obviously when you have a two-goal lead, you'd like to ice the game, but that's hockey. When other teams can score goals too, that's part of it, and you've got to be ready for that. And I think we did a good job of kind of weathering the storm there and finding ways to create opportunities in the third, just couldn't get that last goal." -- Canadiens forward Max Domi
