Washington Capitals

Ilya Samsonov did not practice Sunday after the goalie sustained a lower-body injury during a 3-1 preseason loss at the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday. Samsonov, who saved 28 of 31 shots, will be reevaluated Monday.
"At this point in camp when guys have been on the ice for a while and something happens, I think you proceed with caution and that's where we're at right now," Capitals coach Peter Laviolette said. "He was able to finish the game; it's not something that happened after the game when he got in [the locker room]. There was something that just popped up for him and I think, as we come in today, we'll just reevaluate it and we'll assess things tomorrow and see where he's at."
Samsonov made the save against eight of nine shooters in the practice shootout that followed the game Saturday. It was the first time the 24-year-old played a full game this preseason. He is expected to split goaltending duties with Vitek Vanecek this season after signing a one-year, $2 million contract to remain with Washington as a restricted free agent Aug. 9. -- Tom Gulitti

Pittsburgh Penguins

Jake Guentzel was confirmed positive for COVID-19 on Sunday. The 26-year-old forward is being monitored by the Penguins medical staff and will follow the protocols set by the NHL.
"We're in the process of talking with our team doctors right now and our first concern, first and foremost, is just trying to manage through this short window where we've had a couple of players test positive," coach Mike Sullivan said. "We're going to try to stop it as best we can and get ahead of it there. We're going to do everything we can as a team. It's going to take cooperation from our players, our coaches, everyone involved in order to make it happen."
Dominik Simon replaced Guentzel for a 5-1 preseason victory against the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. Penguins forward Zach Aston-Reese is also in NHL COVID-19 protocol.
"I thought our players did a terrific job with their diligence and their discipline to adhere to some of the protocols that were put forth by the League last year," Sullivan said. "We were able to get through the season without a single COVID case, so this is a little bit of a different environment. But right now, our team is going to do everything in its power to try to get out ahead of this. For example, we're going to start testing our players every single day, and our staff."

Vancouver Canucks

Brock Boeser will be out the rest of the preseason because of an undisclosed injury, general manager Jim Benning said Sunday.
Boeser, who led the Canucks in goals (23) and points (49) in 56 games last season, missed practice Thursday, but there was no update available at the time. Coach Travis Green announced the forward would be out at least a week after a 4-1 preseason loss at the Calgary Flames on Friday.
The Canucks begin the regular season Oct. 13 at the Edmonton Oilers.
"We're hoping that he's ready to start the year, but we'll just have to see how the injury progresses," Benning said.
Benning also said center Brandon Sutter won't be available to start the regular season. Sutter hasn't skated after reporting to training camp with fatigue that remains undiagnosed.
"He's still undergoing some testing," Benning said. "He won't be available to start the season with us, and we'll just continue to monitor him to see where he's at and then once he starts feeling better, he'll get out on the ice and then we'll have a better timeline as to when he'll be back." -- Kevin Woodley

New Jersey Devils

Jack Hughes was injured in the second period of a 2-1 overtime win against the New York Islanders in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Saturday. The center was cross-checked by New York forward Ross Johnston and played one more shift before going to the locker room and not returning.
"He's feeling OK. We hope everything's OK," New Jersey coach Lindy Ruff said after the preseason game. "I think that's encouraging for everybody that I feel that way. I'm hoping it's nothing serious. It's more precautionary. I'm hopeful."
Ruff said defenseman Ty Smith will be off the ice "for a number of days" with an undisclosed injury. He has yet to play in a preseason game. Forward Jesper Bratt (non-COVID illness) skated Saturday with the non-game group after he missed a 7-1 win against the New York Rangers on Friday.

Edmonton Oilers

Josh Archibald is out indefinitely with myocarditis after the forward contracted COVID-19 during the offseason.
"He tried to skate for a few days and just wasn't feeling right, so we did a bunch of tests done with him," Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. "What the tests showed was at some point this summer he had COVID, and he got tested for the antibodies. He was struggling with the viral infection and got a bunch of blood work done and since then has been diagnosed with myocarditis. The doctors are taking care of him. He's getting a bunch more tests done."
The inflammation of the heart muscle is the same condition that Edmonton general manager Ken Holland said Sept. 22 will likely prevent goalie Alex Stalock from playing this season, a decision that could change as he gets more medical opinions. Stalock was diagnosed with myocarditis after testing positive for COVID-19 last season.
"Archibald is] a good player for us, he's kind of our lead guy on the penalty kill and somebody is going to have to fill those roles," Tippett said. "Now we have a bunch of people in competition for those roles, so we'll find the best replacement we can for the time being and we'll see how it goes."
Tippett indicated that forward
[Colton Sceviour

, who is in camp on a professional tryout contract, is a prime candidate to replace Archibald.
"He does similar things to 'Archie,'" Tippett said. "He's a right-hander, a penalty killer, he has good experience, that's why he's in contention for a job here." -- Derek Van Diest
