Ennis scores first NHL trick, Maple Leafs defeat Flames

CALGARY -- Tyler Ennis had his first NHL hat trick, and Zach Hyman scored two goals for the Toronto Maple Leafs in a 6-2 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Monday.

Mitch Marner (one goal, two assists) had three points in a game for the 10th time this season, and Frederik Andersen made 35 saves for Toronto (41-21-4), which moved within one point of the Boston Bruins for second place in the Atlantic Division.
The Maple Leafs have won five of their past six games after a three-game losing streak. They have scored at least five goals in each win.

"This stretch obviously is super important," Ennis said. "Boston's winning all the time it seems. We have to keep winning."
Matthew Tkachuk and Derek Ryan scored, and David Rittich made 26 saves for Calgary (41-18-7), which has lost two straight after a seven-game winning streak. The Flames lead the San Jose Sharks by three points for first in the Pacific Division and Western Conference.
"We're still in a good spot," Tkachuk said. "There's no need to start freaking out or anything. We're still first in the West."
Ennis gave Toronto a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 9:50 of the first period, then scored at even strength to make it 2-0 at 17:15.
Ennis was a healthy scratch for the Maple Leafs' 5-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.
"He's brought a lot," Marner said. "He's got a lot of energy, he's a lot of fun to be around outside the rink. He fits the team very well. He's got a lot of skill and a lot of speed in his body. You see it out there tonight."

Hyman extended the lead to 3-0 at 18:51 of the first period. Rittich made a save against Marner on a breakaway, but Hyman scored on the rebound when the puck deflected in off his skate.
"It was a weird game for me," Rittich said. "I had probably the worst luck on our team during that game. I was a little unlucky with bad bounces, but that's hockey and bad things can happen."
Hyman scored again off a pass from Marner at 4:11 of the second period to make it 4-0.
"He's been doing a great job of coming off the net of finding those soft spots," Marner said of Hyman. "The last couple games, our whole line (Hyman, Marner, John Tavares) in general has been moving the puck very well, getting into the zone. I don't think we're being too pretty in the neutral zone, and that's something moving forward that we'll need."
Tkachuk's 26th of the season made it 4-1 at 15:35 of the second.

Ennis, who played at the junior level about three hours from Calgary with Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey League, completed the hat trick 3:15 into the third period to make it 5-1.
"I've played a lot of games here," Ennis said. "I'm familiar with this rink. To get a hat trick in it with my parents watching playing for the Leafs is a real special night for me."
Ryan made it 5-2 at 12:26, but Marner scored at 12:56 for the 6-2 final.
Marner is the first Maple Leafs player to have 80 points since Phil Kessel in 2013-14.
"It's pretty cool," said Marner, who has 12 points (three goals, nine assists) in his past six games. "It wouldn't be done without the people in this room. A lot of credit has to go to the guys in this locker room. This past year we've been with each other this whole ride, through the ups and downs. It's been a lot of fun. Hopefully it keeps going for a while."
