See Bill Belichick, North Carolina football team be surprised with the Stanley Cup

Bill Belichick has seen a lot of trophies throughout his career, but none quite like this one.

The legendary football coach had a chance to see the Stanley Cup up close and personal, nicely seated in front of his NFL record six Super Bowl trophies.

Belichick – who earned those championship trophies during his time as head coach of the New England Patriots – marveled at Lord Stanley as he walked in the room.

“Wow,” Belichick said in a video posted by the NHL.

“This just represents so much work, sacrifice and performance. It’s awesome,” he continued. “So much tradition, so much history. The names that are on here, the teams that are on here, it’s really amazing.”

Belichick currently coaches the University of North Carolina football team and attended Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday in Raleigh with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman.

The Carolina Hurricanes lost that Game 1 thriller 5-4 to the Vegas Golden Knights, but have a chance to tie the series on Thursday in Game 2 back in Raleigh (8 p.m. ET; ABC, SN, TVAS, CBC) and move one step closer to earning the coveted trophy.

“You see it and you see pictures of it, but when you actually stand next to it and touch it, it sends chills down your spine,” Belichick said of the Cup.
