Sharks team scope

Goaltender Aaron Dell will make his second NHL start for the San Jose Sharks, who are 3-0-0 on their six-game road trip. Dell defeated the New York Islanders 3-2 on Oct. 18 for his first NHL win. His only other action came in relief of Martin Jones on Nov. 5 against in a 5-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. "The guys know this is a tough spot to be in, with that many games between starts," coach Peter DeBoer said. "I have no doubt we are going to play well in front of him. He looked good in practice yesterday. I think he's ready." Forward Matt Nieto, a healthy scratch for eight of the past nine games, will replace Micheal Haley on the fourth line. "He gives us speed," DeBoer said, "He's defensively reliable. He helps our PK. He's a versatile guy. He can go up and down the lineup. He hasn't been an easy guy to sit out, but we've been winning lately and you don't change winning lineups very often." Many of the Sharks were on and off the ice quickly for their optional morning skate.

Hurricanes team scope

Defenseman Justin Faulk will be back in the lineup for the Carolina Hurricanes after sitting out three games with an upper-body injury. Faulk left the game against the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 6 after getting tangled along the boards with Taylor Hall. "I've been getting better every day," he said. "I felt good yesterday in practice. One of the biggest issues coming back is being able to handle the hits and the pressure in a game. You can't get that in practice." Matt Tennyson, who played his first NHL game of the season in a 5-1 win against the Washington Capitals on Saturday, will face against his former team on Tuesday. He played 60 games for the Sharks during the past three seasons. "It was nice to get that first one out of the way and not have to do it against San Jose," Tennyson said. "It doesn't change anything based on who you are playing or what the circumstances may be. You just go play your game." The Hurricanes worked on the power play during their morning skate, using a variety of personnel combinations. Carolina had seven power-play goals in the first seven games of the season, but two in the past seven. "We need to get some power-play results," coach Bill Peters said.
