An undrafted free agent who began his professional hockey career playing with South Carolina and Utah in the ECHL, Haley signed with the New York Islanders on May 19, 2008. He made his NHL debut on April 10, 2010 and played 43 games with the Islanders over three seasons. Haley scored his first NHL goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Feb. 11, 2011.
After playing nine games with the New York Rangers in 2012-13, Haley returned to the NHL with the San Jose Sharks in 2014-15 and played his first full season in the League with the Sharks in 2016-17, when he had an NHL career-high 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) in 58 games.

He started 2018-19 with the Panthers but returned to the Sharks on Feb. 20 when he was claimed on waivers. He returned to the Rangers, signing as a free agent on Oct. 1, 2019.
