Recap: Devils End Canes' 11-Game Home Point Streak

→ The Carolina Hurricanes had their 11-game home point streak snapped by the New Jersey Devils, who handed the Hurricanes their first regulation loss at home since Nov. 12 in a 3-1 decision. Sebastian Aho tallied the lone goal for the Hurricanes, while Michael Cammalleri's third-period goal proved to be the game-winner for New Jersey.
"We were really flat all throughout the lineup," Jordan Staal said. "We didn't generate enough."
"We've got to find a way to break through [their defense] and create offense," Jeff Skinner said. "We didn't do enough of that."
"I don't think too many guys in the room were happy with the way we played as a team. We can't play like that and expect results," head coach Bill Peters said. "There's reality there. It's not like we're sitting there thinking we played well and deserved a better fate."

→ The Hurricanes were not without their chances to score. After two periods, the Canes held a 20-9 shot advantage and had three power play opportunities, but still trailed the Devils 1-0.
"We didn't execute as well as we'd like," Staal said. "They did a good job of clogging up the neutral zone and making it difficult for us to either enter the blue line with speed or get a good forecheck on them."
"We needed something," Peters said.
In the third period, Sebastian Aho banged in a rebound off the lively end boards to halve the Devils lead to 2-1.
"Seabass did a good job of getting us on the board, and then you want to have a good push after that," Skinner said.
Seconds later, the Hurricanes were rewarded with another power play. They failed to convert on the man advantage, and it's been seven straight games now in which the Canes have gone without a power-play tally (0-for-16).
"We needed our power play, on a night like tonight, to give us a boost," Peters said. "The power play had four opportunities. You need to get on the board."
"Obviously that's not the production you want to have," Skinner said. "You want to get out there and every time create good looks. You're not always going to score on them, but you want to try to create momentum if you don't score. I think we have to continue to strive for that."
Expect to see some adjustments made on the man advantage moving forward, just as Peters and the coaching staff tinkered with the 5-on-5 lines heading into tonight's third period in an effort to generate offense.
"The mix, I think, needs to be changed for sure. It's no different than lines," Peters explained. "It looks stale, flat and predictable. It doesn't look dangerous right now."

→ Goals from Adam Henrique and Michael Cammalleri, who has scored four of his 10 goals this season against the Canes, set up the Devils, who played the night prior, with a 2-0 lead.
"I didn't love our game. I didn't think we exactly played fast," Peters said. "We try to play with a little more pace than that, and tonight, for some reason, we didn't play fast at all. We settled for the D to the D to the D to the D back to the D and then to them."
After posting a 22-save shutout against the Bruins on Monday night, Schneider stopped 29 of 30 shots in the Devils' victory tonight, their third win in as many tries against the Canes this season.
"We knew coming into tonight that they won the previous two games against us, and we wanted to have a good response," Skinner said. "We weren't able to come up with it."
→ Defenseman Jaccob Slavin skated in his 100th career NHL game tonight. This season, Slavin leads all Canes skaters in average time on ice per game at 23:16.
→ The Hurricanes will play a back-to-back pair against Western Conference opponents on the road this week, first in St. Louis on Thursday and then in Chicago on Friday.
"We haven't played as well coming off the break, and that's disappointing. That's just the reality," Peters said. "We haven't played as well as we were going into the break, so we have to find a way to get that back."
