Islanders pull away in third, hand Flyers 10th straight loss

ELMONT, N.Y. -- Brock Nelson and Anthony Beauvillier scored 22 seconds apart in the third period, and the New York Islanders handed the Philadelphia Flyers their 10th straight loss with a 5-2 win at UBS Arena on Saturday.

Zach Parise scored two power-play goals, Ryan Pulock had four assists, and Semyon Varlamov made 26 saves for New York (15-8-0), which has won four straight.
"We're playing good hockey right now," Parise said.
"[Philadelphia] doesn't make it easy, they work really hard, so it's not always easy to generate, but again, we were able to keep pressing and take over toward the end of the second and into the third."

Lukas Sedlak had a goal and an assist for Philadelphia (7-10-5), which is 0-7-3 in its past 10. Felix Sandstrom made 18 saves.
"We're going to keep banging away at it," Flyers coach John Tortorella said. "I saw a lot of good things tonight. I'm not going to criticize the hockey team."
Nelson put the Islanders in front 3-2 at 2:56 of the third, shooting glove side on Sandstrom from the left circle.
Beauvillier then made it 4-2 at 3:19, scoring from the low slot following a giveaway by Kevin Hayes.
"Brock just [made] a great shot," Beauviller said. "Second one, [Pulock made] a great play in the slot to me, and it was definitely a game-changer."

Parise scored his second on the power play at 11:57 to make it 5-2. He roofed a shot over Sandstrom's right shoulder from the left circle.
New York finished 2-for-3 on the power play. Philadelphia was 0-for-2.
"The theme has to be shoot, shoot," Parise said. "And we know as a penalty kill once they start shooting and you start running around a little bit you get out of your structure. I think when we're shooting the puck and hunting down the second chances and second waves, that's when we're scoring."
Adam Pelech gave New York a 1-0 lead at 4:33 of the first period, scoring on a one-timer from the left hash marks off a pass from Beauvillier from below the goal line.
It was the 18th goal scored by an Islanders defenseman this season, the most in the NHL.
"Be more aggressive and chipping in offensively when we can," Pelech said. "Defending first, that will always be our calling card."

Sedlak tied it 1-1 at 15:27 when he chipped a centering pass from Hayes over Varlamov's glove.
Joel Farabee gave Philadelphia a 2-1 lead at 9:28 of the second period on a rebound.
"We had good puck possession and were rewarded with two goals," Hayes said. "That was not enough."
Parise tied it 2-2 at 16:38, driving to the net and tucking a backhand five-hole on Sandstrom during a power play after the Flyers couldn't clear the zone.
"He's on the power play, he kills penalties, plays against other teams' top lines," Islanders coach Lane Lambert said of Parise. "He's very versatile. There's no question about it. I give him full marks. I thought he was one of the catalysts tonight to get us going."
