With a dozen days remaining in the regular season, there are nine playoff berths available. Each day, NHL.com takes a look at the playoff picture.
CLINCHING SCENARIOS
* The New York Rangers will clinch a playoff berth if they defeat the Carolina Hurricanes in regulation or overtime.
* The Nashville Predators will clinch a playoff berth if they defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins in any fashion.
KEY GAME
Nashville Predators at Pittsburgh Penguins (7 p.m. ET; NHLN, TVA Sports, SNO, SNW, SNP, FS-TN, ROOT): So much is on the line for each team; Nashville will be trying to clinch a Western Conference playoff berth for the third consecutive game. The Predators need a win to put themselves out of reach of the Colorado Avalanche, the first team outside the playoff picture in the West. Pittsburgh has won nine of its past 10 games. If it can win Thursday, second place in the Metropolitan Division could be in the offing. To land in second, the Penguins need a win combined with a Rangers loss in regulation against the Hurricanes.
WOE CANADA
The Ottawa Senators may have won a game Wednesday, defeating the Winnipeg Jets 2-1, but they lost the playoff war. The elimination of the Senators, which came when the Flyers defeated the Capitals in a shootout, was felt throughout Canada. Ottawa became the seventh and final Canadian-based team to be eliminated from postseason contention. The 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs will be the first since 1970 with no Canadian-based teams.
