Leafs-Win-Preds

TORONTO-- Frederik Andersen made 44 saves and stopped six of seven shootout attempts to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 3-2 win against the Nashville Predators at Air Canada Centre on Wednesday.

"It was a tough game, there's not a lot of space out there," Andersen said. "They play a good style of hockey with good defensemen. We didn't have much room, but I think we did a good job as well. Their goals came out of some tough bounces, but that's how the hockey is going to be like going down the stretch. It was a good test for us, I think we played well."
James van Riemsdyk scored in the first period and had the winning shootout goal in the seventh round.

"You watch a little bit of the guys going before you, and obviously you have some moves in mind that you usually try to go for, and then when you come down the ice, you just go off instinct and look for something that you think is there," van Riemsdyk said. "I wanted to try something a little bit different than I normally do."
Tyler Bozak also scored in the shootout to end Pekka Rinne's eight-game winning streak, and Kasperi Kapanen scored in the second period for the Maple Leafs (32-19-5), who have won six of their past seven games.
Colton Sissons and Viktor Arvidsson scored, and Rinne made 30 saves for the Predators (32-12-8), who had won three in a row.
"We created a lot of chances and Andersen played a really strong game and gave them a chance," Rinne said. "We'll take the point, but anytime you play good as a team like that, it's disappointing to lose."
Arvidsson tied it 2-2 25 seconds into the third period when his shot led to a rebound he put between Andersen's pads.

The Predators made it 2-1 at 18:10 of the second period when Sissons put a rebound past Andersen after Pontus Aberg's shot hit van Riemsdyk in the slot.
"That's a good team competing at a high level," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. "As the game went on, they got quicker and quicker and we watched them more and more. Freddie had to be good, so good for Freddie and good for us, we got the points. It just goes to show we've got a ways to go."
The Maple Leafs took a 1-0 lead at 16:06 of the first period when van Riemsdyk took a pass from Connor Brown and one-timed a slap shot that deflected off the stick of Predators defenseman Alexei Emelin.

Kapanen scored a shorthanded goal at 9:38 of the second period to make it 2-0. He spun away from Predators forward Craig Smith and shot between Rinne's pads.
"I was getting pretty tired there, so I just gave it all I had and lucky enough I just got [Smith] on my back and it ended up the way it did," Kapanen said.
Andersen made 15 saves in the third period, including on a wraparound by Ryan Johansen with 1:08 left. Nashville outshot Toronto 35-17 in the last two periods.
"I think as the game went on, we got a lot better," Predators forward Kyle Turris said. "We've got to start games the way that we played in the third though. If we play the whole game like we did in the third, it would be a better outcome for us."
