KINGS (17-13-3) AT STARS (13-14-7)

Kings team scope

The Los Angeles Kings didn't have a morning skate prior to the second of back-to-back games after defeating the Nashville Predators 4-0 on Thursday. Forward Tyler Toffoli didn't play against Nashville because of a lower-body injury and is day to day. He had played 149 consecutive games before Thursday. The Kings penalty kill has been perfect in the past eight games, going 22-for-22 since allowing two power-play goals against the Montreal Canadiens on Dec. 4. "I think limiting the number of penalties that we take obviously helps," coach Darryl Sutter said Thursday." Two or three a game, and we have good centermen that are pretty good penalty-killers. There's no secret to it." Goalie Peter Budaj has started four straight games and allowed a total of three goals. He made 28 saves in the shutout victory at Nashville. Budaj has played 29 games since starter Jonathan Quick was injured on opening night. "Obviously, you don't want to go in the net when somebody's hurt," he said Thursday. "It's unfortunate, but on the other hand, it's an opportunity for me to show everybody that I can still do this." This is the seventh of nine consecutive road games for the Kings, who don't play at home until Dec. 31.

Stars team scope

Dallas Stars forward Antoine Roussel didn't take part in the optional morning skate and is doubtful with an undisclosed injury sustained during practice Wednesday. If Roussel can't play, the Stars will dress seven defensemen because Cody Eakin is serving the third of a four-game suspension for charging New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist on Dec. 15. Defenseman Stephen Johns also is doubtful with a lower-body injury, meaning Jamie Oleksiak and Patrik Nemeth could get back into the lineup. Oleksiak hasn't played since being suspended for two games on Dec. 10. Nemeth has been a healthy scratch 10 of the past 11 games. Coach Lindy Ruff said the Stars will rotate forwards on the fourth line, but Nemeth or Oleksiak could take a couple of shifts at forward. "I look at it that we've got some forwards that can handle some extra ice time," Ruff said. "It's going to be a low-chance affair. It's going to be a hard game, so I think we can rotate the back end a little bit or we can throw somebody up front." Kari Lehtonen was the first goalie off the ice at the morning skate and is expected to start. Antti Niemi was 2-1-1 in the first four of a five-game homestand.
