Lundqvist announces he is out of hospital following open-heart surgery

is out of the hospital and back home with his family following open-heart surgery, the Washington Capitals goalie announced on his Twitter and Instagram accounts.

Lundqvist has been keeping fans updated on his health since doctors discovered in mid-December that he needed the surgery and would be unable to play this season.

"Left the hospital yesterday," he wrote in the posts. "I've (spent) a lot of days away from my kids over the last 5-8 years because of hockey. The last 9 days felt way different. It literally warmed my heart pulling up to the driveway."
Lundqvist had the surgery for ascending aortic replacement at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland and said in a subsequent post that he would be staying there for a few days before going to New York City to continue his recovery and rehabilitation.

He signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Capitals on Oct. 9 after the New York Rangers bought out the final year of his contract on Sept. 30. Lundqvist had spent his 15 seasons in the NHL with the Rangers.
