Fleury's save vs. Anaheim's first responders

The 2019-20 NHL season had many incredible moments before it was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, and now fans can decide which one was the best.

The Greatest Moments of the NHL Season … So Far is down to 16 entries from the original bracket of 64 with the first two rounds now complete. Fans will vote on one matchup per day, ultimately deciding the greatest moment up until this point.

Fans can vote on Twitter and Instagram each day from noon until 10 a.m. ET the next day. Each day, the winner of that matchup will be revealed, and a new set of moments will go head-to-head.

Though fans will have the ultimate say, two NHL.com staffers will weigh in on the matchup each day to give his or her opinion on which one should advance to the fourth round.

In the matchup on Tuesday, Oliver Ekman-Larsson of the Arizona Coyotes bringing a special guest to Hockey Fights Cancer Night defeated the Sedin twins having their jerseys retired by the Vancouver Canucks.

The matchup Wednesday has Vegas Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury making an incredible glove save to help preserve a win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Nov. 19 going against the Anaheim Ducks' tribute March 11 for the first responders from St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester's cardiac episode one month earlier.

There's a reason Fleury's amazing save has advanced through the first two rounds: Because it was, well, amazing, and ultimately worthy of being the season's greatest moment to this point. The eyes of Maple Leafs forward Nic Petan widened when he saw nothing but an open net after the initial shot by Toronto forward Ilya Mikheyev caromed off the crossbar, but fans at T-Mobile Arena experienced the same reaction a moment later, when Fleury dove all-out, his glove snagging the shot to help secure an eventual 4-2 Vegas victory. To me, the best part is Fleury flashing a huge grin afterward, loving the moment as much as all of us did. "It was fun, a little lucky," he said. "I just enjoyed it, got a little giggle, a little smile. I was happy it didn't go in."

Fleury's save was amazing, but it pales in comparison to the real save made by the first responders at Honda Center on Feb. 11. I'll argue in favor of those who tended to Bouwmeester and helped to save his life every day of the week against pretty much every other moment in the season. These are heroes. We're recognizing health care workers now, in the face of the coronavirus pandemic. They are on the front lines caring for infected patients, putting themselves at risk. They were heroes that night in Anaheim too. Bouwmeester still is alive because of them. The Ducks did right by the people who saved Bouwmeester's life by honoring them with the Red Cross Lifesaver Award. It was an easy gesture on behalf of the team, and it spoke volumes about how we all should honor the men and women who help save us, treat us, heal us. The Ducks went one step further that night by promising 19 percent, in honor of Bouwmeester's jersey number, of all merchandise sales plus a portion of their 50/50 raffle would go the UCI Medical Center, where the Blues defenseman was treated. Class. All class.
