Coleman's pretty goal vs. Luongo's jersey retirement

The 2019-20 NHL season had many incredible moments before it paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, and now fans can decide which one was the best.

The Greatest Moments of the NHL season … So Far have been placed into a bracket of 64 entries, and fans will vote on one matchup per day, ultimately deciding the greatest moment up until this point.

Fans can vote on Twitter and Instagram each day from noon until 10 a.m. ET the next day. Each day, the winner of that matchup will be revealed, and a new set of moments will go head-to-head.

Though fans will have the ultimate say, two NHL.com staffers will weigh in on the matchup each day to give his or her opinion on which one should advance to the next round.

In the matchup on Sunday, Tuukka Rask's sprawling save for the Boston Bruins defeated the New York Islanders extending their winning streak to 10 games.

The matchup Monday pits New Jersey Devils forward Blake Coleman's one-handed goal Oct. 4 against the jersey retirement ceremony for Florida Panthers goalie Roberto Luongo.

I've always found Luongo to be a character who stirs good emotions, so to see a little payback in that respect, when the Panthers raised Luongo's No. 1 to the rafters at BB&T Center before their game against the Montreal Canadiens on March 7, was a most heartening moment of the NHL season. Luongo, the Florida leader in shutouts with 38, was the first Panthers player to have his jersey retired. He played 20 NHL seasons, 11 with the Panthers, and represented Florida three times (2004, 2015, 2016) at the NHL All-Star Game. To many fans, he was and still is a must-follow on Twitter. "I think he is somebody that represented all of the positive values of our game," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "Perhaps, as importantly, besides excellence on the ice being an important member of whatever community he was living in -- this community in particular, which he's made his permanent home."

I'm fully aware that I've got the underdog in this matchup, so I better be convincing. With that said, I'll just sit here and wait until you watch the video of the goal. Watch Coleman when he blows out of the defensive zone as soon as he sees center Pavel Zacha win the face-off back to defenseman P.K. Subban. Watch Coleman when he gains inside position on Jets defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, fends him off with his left arm as he reaches out with his right, stick in hand, in the left circle. Watch as from his knees he somehow has enough strength to flip the puck high and into the far side of the net, over goalie Laurent Brossoit's catching glove. Go ahead and watch. Do it. I'll wait for your reaction. …………………………………………… Ah, yes, there you go. Convincing enough? I think so.
