flames

Johnny Gaudreau had the biggest night of his NHL career on Tuesday, scoring three goals and assisting on three others to help the Calgary Flames defeat the
New Jersey Devils 9-4
at Scotiabank Saddledome.

Gaudreau's fifth NHL hat trick powered the Flames, who scored nine goals in a game for the second time this season; they defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 9-6 on Dec. 4.

Enterprise Hat Trick: Gaudreau nets three for Flames

Calgary is the fifth team in the past 20 years to score nine goals in a game twice in a season, joining the Toronto Maple Leafs (1998-99, 2005-06 and 2006-07), Ottawa Senators (1998-99), Carolina Hurricanes (2008-09) and St. Louis Blues (2010-11).
The forward is the 11th player in Calgary/Atlanta Flames history to have six points in a regular-season game and the first since defenseman Al MacInnis had one goal and five assists on March 20, 1994.
Gaudreau, who established NHL career highs in goals (33) and points (90), is the first player to have six points in a game since Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn had one goal and five assists at Calgary on Nov. 14, 2013.
Gaudreau also is the seventh player in Flames history to reach the 90-point mark in 70 or fewer games and the first in Calgary/Atlanta history to reach 90 points since Jarome Iginla had 98 (50 goals, 48 assists) in 2007-08. He is on pace to become the sixth player in Flames history to have at least 105 points in a season; the last was Joe Mullen (110 points; 51 goals, 59 assists) in 1988-89.

Malkin, Ovechkin reach milestones in same game

Center Evgeni Malkin got his second assist of the game on forward Phil Kessel's eventual game-winning goal in the third period of the Pittsburgh Penguins' 5-3 win against the Washington Capitals at PPG Paints Arena to become the 88th player in NHL history and fifth active skater to
reach 1,000 points
. He joins San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton (1,469 points; 411 goals, 1,058 assists), Penguins center Sidney Crosby (1,206 points; 444 goals, 762 assists), Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin (1,200 points, 653 goals, 547 assists) and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Patrick Marleau (1,164 points; 549 goals, 615 assists).
Malkin, taken by Pittsburgh with the No. 2 pick in the 2004 NHL Draft, is the fifth Russia-born player to reach 1,000 points in the NHL; he joins fellow Russian Ovechkin, the No. 1 pick in 2004, as the second player from his draft year to reach the milestone.
Since the first NHL Draft was held in 1963, three other sets of players have each recorded at least 1,000 points after being drafted No. 1 and No. 2 in the same year. The others: Guy Lafleur and Marcel Dionne (1971), Pierre Turgeon and Brendan Shanahan (1987) and Thornton and Marleau (1997).

Malkin picks up his 1,000th career point vs. Capitals

The Penguins joined the Detroit Red Wings as the only teams to have four players with at least 1,000 points entirely with their respective teams. Gordie Howe (1,809), Steve Yzerman (1,755), Alex Delvecchio (1,281) and Nicklas Lidstrom (1,142) did it with Detroit; Mario Lemieux (1,723), Crosby (1,206), Jaromir Jagr (1,079) and Malkin (1,000) had at least 1,000 points with Pittsburgh.
Ovechkin had a third-period assist to become the 49th player in NHL history to reach 1,200 points. Ovechkin, Crosby (who got his 1,200th point one week earlier) and Thornton are the as the only active NHL players with at least 1,200 points. Ovechkin's 653 goals are the second-most of any player at the time of reaching 1,200 points; only Brett Hull (656) had more.

Price becomes winningest goalie in Canadiens history

Carey Price made 20 saves for the Montreal Canadiens in a
3-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings
at Bell Centre for his 315th regular-season win, passing Jacques Plante (314) for the most in Canadiens history. Montreal is 9-0-0 in its past nine games against the Red Wings and swept the season series against Detroit for the second time in as many seasons.
Price is the ninth active NHL goalie to rank No. 1 on his current team's all-time regular-season wins list and the third to do so with an Original Six team, joining Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers (449) and Tuukka Rask of the Boston Bruins (262).

Sharks score late to defeat Jets; another milestone for Thornton

Center Joe Pavelski's goal with five seconds remaining in the third period
gave the Sharks a 5-4 win
against the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place, keeping San Jose (43-19-8) one point in front of Calgary (43-20-7) for first place in the Pacific Division and the Western Conference. The Sharks won their sixth consecutive game, the longest active winning streak in the NHL.
Pavelski scored San Jose's third goal this season within the final five seconds of the third period (excluding empty-net goals). The Sharks are the 17th team in NHL history and second this season, along with the Chicago Blackhawks, to score at least three such goals in a single season. The only team with more than three goals in the final five seconds of the third period was the 2015-16 Hurricanes, who had four.
Thornton had two assists to give him 1,469 points, moving him past Stan Mikita into sole possession of 14th place on the NHL all-time list.

Bishop has third straight shutout for Stars

Ben Bishop made 35 saves for the Dallas Stars in a
2-0 win
against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center for his third consecutive shutout. He joins Cesare Maniago (Dec. 10-21, 1967) and Ed Belfour (Nov. 17-24, 2000) as the only goalies in Stars/Minnesota North Stars history to have three straight shutouts.

Bishop earns Tuesday's Pepsi Zero Sugar Shutout

Bishop extended his personal shutout streak to 204:20, passing Vegas Golden Knights goalie Marc-Andre Fleury (200:41 from Feb. 26-March 6) for the longest in the NHL this season.
The Stars (36-28-5), who hold the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference, moved within two points of the St. Louis Blues (36-26-7) for third place in the Central Division.

Kane, McDavid each eye 100th point

Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane and Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid, who have combined to win the past three NHL scoring championships, will try to join Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov as 100-point scorers this season when they take part in a "
Wednesday Night Hockey
" doubleheader.
Kane (98 points; 41 goals, 57 assists) can reach 100 points for the second time in his NHL career when the Blackhawks visit the Toronto Maple Leafs (7 p.m. ET; NBCSN, SN, TVAS). Kane had 106 points (46 goals, 60 assists) in 2015-16, when he won the Art Ross Trophy.
McDavid (98 points; 34 goals, 64 assists) will try to reach 100 points for the third straight season when the Oilers host the New Jersey Devils (9:30 p.m.; NBCSN, SN1). McDavid led the NHL in scoring with 100 points (30 goals, 70 assists) in 2016-17, and again last season with 108 points (41 goals, 67 assists). Kucherov leads all NHL scorers this season with 111 points (33 goals, 78 assists).
The last season to have at least three 100-point scorers through this point in the season was 1995-96, when three members of the Penguins -- Lemieux (135 points; 56 goals, 79 assists in 58 games played), Jagr (131 points; 56 goals, 75 assists in 68 games), and Ron Francis (102 points; 24 goals, 78 assists in 63 games) -- each did it, as did Peter Forsberg of the Colorado Avalanche (102 points; 26 goals, 76 assists in 69 games).
Multiple players have reached the 100-point mark on the same day twice since 1996-97. Daniel Alfredsson of the Senators and Eric Staal of the Hurricanes did it on April 15, 2006; Ottawa's Dany Heatley and Tampa Bay's Martin St. Louis combined for the feat on March 31, 2007.
