The Lightning clinched when the New Jersey Devils lost to the Anaheim Ducks 4-2 later Sunday.
"We had a chance to play out some scenarios tonight that we have struggled with in the past," Tampa Bay captain Steven Stamkos said. "Coming back in games after a tough bounce and playing with a one-goal lead in the third, I thought we did a great job of securing it, getting an extra one and not sitting back."

Ty Rattie scored, and Al Montoya made 37 saves for the Oilers (31-36-5), who are 4-2-1 in their past seven games. Edmonton is 17 points behind the Los Angeles Kings for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Western Conference.
Kucherov gave the Lightning a 2-1 lead at 2:24 of the second period with a power-play goal off a pass from Stamkos.
"I didn't know where he was," Montoya said. "It wasn't one of his better ones I think. It was one of his [free] ones."
Kucherov extended the lead to 3-1 at 11:34 of the third period with a backhand from the hash marks. He leads the NHL with 93 points (36 goals, 57 assists).

Rattie scored to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead 14 seconds into the first period. Domingue mishandled the puck behind the net, and Rattie scored off the turnover as Domingue tried to get back into the crease.
"I came in ready. I was feeling good," Domingue said. "There are days when you give up a goal like that and it's going to be harder. But I washed it away right away. It was one of those things; the guys are coming in tapping your pads. It was just a bad break. You can't do anything about it."
Hedman tied the game 1-1 at 15:12 of the first period with a slap shot off a face-off win by Brayden Point that deflected off the stick of Rattie.
"I thought we played pretty well," Point said. "We worked hard. We had a lot of time in their end. We were really skating back and playing defense. That's what led to our offense."
Domingue made 14 saves in the third period, including three straight on Connor McDavid, Ryan Strome and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins during an Oilers power play.
"I don't know how much more we can do on the power play without scoring a goal," Strome said. "But at the end of the day, they got one and we didn't. In a close game like that, you need to find a way to bury it."
The Oilers went 0-5 on the power play, which included a 5-on-3 for 28 seconds with 6:35 remaining in the third.
"In the end, the first couple [penalty kills], it was just outstanding work by the guys in front of the goaltender," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "Then in the last couple, straight on through the 5-on-3, Louis was the difference in the end. He made those big saves, and [Ryan] McDonagh stopped one, and guys were just sacrificing their bodies."

They said it

"Right now, they are a better team than we are, and we know the work that we have to do to catch up. It can be done, and it will be done. Both teams played a back-to-back, and I thought they had a little more in the gas tank than we did." -- Oilers coach Todd McLellan
"The team is one thing, but how about the goaltender who gets a tough break there and let's that one in and then doesn't let one in the rest of the night. It says a lot about [his] mental makeup." -- Lightning coach Jon Cooper on Louis Domingue
