WASHINGTON-- The Washington Capitals extended their first-place lead in the Metropolitan Division with a 4-3 win against the Dallas Stars at Capital One Arena on Tuesday.

John Carlson scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:59 left in the third period, and Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 44th goal for the Capitals (42-24-7), who lead the Pittsburgh Penguins by four points in the division.
"These are big points now," Carlson said. "Everyone can see how tight the race is and everyone is jockeying for position. You have to collect them when you can. And we had a good game tonight, so that's the most positive."

Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Alexander Radulov scored for the Stars (38-28-8), who lost their sixth game in a row completing a winless road trip (0-4-2). Dallas remained two points behind the Anaheim Ducks for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup playoffs from the Western Conference having played one more game.
"The road trip from hell's over and we go home," Seguin said. "Nothing you can really do now. Got to get home, got to get points. We're playing some good teams, but we've got to find a way here."
Carlson's goal made it 4-3 at 15:01, a one-timer from the top of the right face-off circle. He and Stars defenseman John Klingberg had two points each and are tied for the NHL lead for points by a defenseman (61).
The Stars took a 1-0 lead on Seguin's power-play goal at 16:04 of the first period.
T.J. Oshie tied the game 1-1 at 4:07 of the second period after a tap pass from Lars Eller. Matt Niskanen gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead at 5:32 when his wrist shot from the blue line beat Kari Lehtonen. The play was reviewed to determine if the puck deflected off a high stick.

The Stars tied it 2-2 at 11:48, five seconds after their fourth power play expired. Radulov tipped a shot by Klingberg from the left face-off circle.
"I don't know what's the longest we had the lead there, but it felt like every time we scored they were either having a good shift or they were coming back and scoring pretty quick after," Oshie said.
Ovechkin gave Washington a 3-2 lead with a one-timer after a face-off win on the power play at 13:41. Benn tied it 3-3 at 18:15 after a turnover by Eller in the neutral zone.
Braden Holtby made 24 saves for Washington. His pad save on Klingberg at 13:48 of the third period kept the score 3-3. Carlson's goal came 1:13 later.
"It was a pretty good effort by the guys," Niskanen said. "That was a good hockey game. Dallas has got some high-end talent over there that can really score. They managed to get a couple, but we scored a few more."

They said it

"We had players that really carried the ball the last four games of this trip and we still couldn't get wins. I think to expect some of the guys that have played awful well to play better is unrealistic moving forward. I think we've got to have more people join the fight." -- Stars coach Ken Hitchcock
"Definitely feel like I got a little jump back. Pucks are starting to find the net a little bit for me. I don't know if 'back' is the right term, but I do feel good." -- Capitals forward T.J. Oshie, who has four goals in his past four games
