Carl Soderberg was traded to the Colorado Avalanche by the Chicago Blackhawks for forwards Josh Dickinson and Ryder Rolston on Monday.
Soderberg signed a one-year contract with the Blackhawks on Dec. 26 and can become an unrestricted free agent after the season. The 35-year-old forward has scored 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 34 games this season.
Soderberg played 321 games for Colorado from 2015-19 before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes. Selected by the St. Louis Blues in the second round (No. 49) of the 2004 NHL Draft, he has scored 295 points (110 goals, 185 assists) in 586 regular-season games with the Blackhawks, Arizona Coyotes, Avalanche and Boston Bruins and 12 points (two goals, 10 assists) in 41 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
The Avalanche also acquired defenseman Patrik Nemeth from the Detroit Red Wings on Friday for a fourth-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. He played 142 games for Colorado from 2017-19 before signing with the Red Wings as a free agent.
"We're a firm believer in chemistry, having character guys," Avalanche general manager Joe Sakic said. "We know them really well, they know our system, both of them were popular guys in the dressing room when they were here and I know excited they are to come back. Our dressing room's excited our guys are excited to have them back.
"They both fill the needs that we wanted to get accomplished. We were looking to getting a defending defenseman, a PK guy, and Patrik did a great job for us before. He's had a great two years in Detroit. (Erik Johnson) is out at least for the rest of the regular season and we wanted to make sure we had that big body, defending body, and can eat up some of the penalty killing minutes so we can rest some of the other guys."
