Highmore, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was passed over twice in the NHL Draft. But after he scored 34 goals and 89 points for St. John of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League in 2016-17, the Chicago Blackhawks signed the free agent center March 2, 2017.
He began the 2017-18 season with Rockford of the American League but earned a late season callup by the Blackhawks and made his NHL debut against the San Jose Sharks on March 1, 2018. Highmore scored his first NHL goal against the Boston Bruins nine days later and finished with two goals in 13 games.

Highmore was assigned to Rockford to begin the 2018-19 season but was limited to 12 games by a shoulder injury that required season-ending surgery. He began 2019-20 with Rockford but was recalled by the Blackhawks on Nov. 26.
