BOS@EDM: Pastrnak beats Smith on breakaway in OT

EDMONTON-- David Pastrnak scored 1:14 into overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 2-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Wednesday.

Pastrnak scored on a breakaway between the pads of Mike Smith. The forward is tied for the NHL lead with 43 goals.
"Torey Krug] made a great defensive play on a 2-on-1, and then [David] Krejci won a battle and I was gone," Pastrnak said. "He sent it over and I went on a breakaway and the goalie tried to poke check so I tried to go five-hole."

Boston (38-11-12), which leads the Atlantic Division, has won four in a row and is 10-1-0 in its past 11 games.
"Typically when we're at our best, it's a low-scoring game and we force the other team to stay in the game," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. "I give Edmonton a lot of credit, they've done that lately, the know they're light in their lineup, so good for the American [Hockey] League guys to come up and do that job."

BOS@EDM: Gagner tips Bear's shot in for PPG

Sam Ganger scored a tying goal in the third period, and Smith made 28 saves for Edmonton (32-21-7), which leads the Pacific Division. The Oilers were without center Connor McDavid (quad) for a fifth consecutive game, and defenseman Oscar Klefbom (shoulder), James Neal (foot) and Zack Kassian (suspended).
"It's a valuable point for us, but I think the thing we want to learn from that game is to have a little swagger early on, making plays and having confidence with it in the first period would have set us up a little better," Gagner said. "We clawed our way to a point, and there is a lot to like about the last two periods and the way we played against a really good team. We'll take the point and keep pushing forward."
Patrice Bergeron scored at 8:28 of the first period to give Boston a 1-0 lead. He took a pass from Brad Marchand in front and made a move around Smith.
"Anytime you're missing some key players and there are guys that are called up, it's a big opportunity for them and you know they're going to play a simple game and they're going to play a hard game and that's what we got tonight," Bergeron said. "We played them in Boston (a 4-1 loss Jan. 4) it was the same kind of hockey, and it was no surprise they played well, and ultimately we got the extra point."

Gagner tied it 1-1 on the power play at 3:42 of the third. Standing in the high slot, he tipped a point shot by defenseman Ethan Bear.
"I thought our whole group wasn't very good in the first period, but at the start of the second period we started to play with some confidence," Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. "Our group started to push a little bit. They started to play a little quicker and make a few passes on the tape. It is amazing how you can start playing and look a little quicker. As a group we started poor, but we battled hard and got better as the game went on."
Tuukka Rask made 28 saves for Boston. He is 6-1-0 since missing three games with a concussion sustained against the Columbus Blue Jackets on Jan. 14.
"We were battling hard we kept them on the outside," Rask said. "In the second period, I think they had the most dangerous chances on the power play, but whenever rebounds were laying there, the guys cleared them out."

They said it

"We knew they have a lot of new faces because of the injuries, so we knew they were going to play tight and together. It's always tough to play in this building, so it's a good thing we stuck with it and we were able to kill a few penalties and Tuukka won us the game." -- Bruins forward David Pastrnak
"Our first period we didn't play with much confidence, then we started to make a few more plays and created more offense for our team. We know we can play with these teams, we've just got to believe it." -- Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse
