Gibson makes 34 saves for Ducks in victory against Sharks

John Gibson made 34 saves for the Anaheim Ducks in a 5-1 win against the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center in San Jose on Tuesday.

David Backes and Nicolas Deslauriers each had a goal and an assist for the Ducks (12-21-7), who won in regulation for the second time since Feb. 11.
"It was just a great team effort, system and individual," Deslauriers said. "I think everybody brought their working boots."
Patrick Marleau scored his 565th NHL goal to move into 23rd place in NHL history, and Martin Jones made 29 saves for the Sharks (17-17-4), who had a season-long four-game winning streak end.
"For whatever reason, we weren't ready," Sharks coach Bob Boughner said. "They started on time, we didn't. They had their legs, we didn't."

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead when Adam Henrique scored shortside from the inside edge of the left circle at 5:55 of the first period.
Max Comtois scored 24 seconds into the second period on a power play that carried over from the first to extend the lead to 2-0.
Rookie defenseman Jamie Drysdale fed Comtois with a shot pass, and he redirected the puck for his 11th goal to tie Henrique for the team lead.
"There's been times this season where you feel confident going into the game and it doesn't go your way," Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said. "And there's been times when you don't feel great about games, and you play very well."
San Jose came back with a power-play goal at 1:29 to make it 2-1.
Kevin Labanc slid the puck to Marleau on his left, and the 41-year-old forward scored into the open net with Gibson still out of the crease. Marleau moved past Mats Sundin and Joe Nieuwendyk on the NHL all-time goals list.
Jones lost track of the puck after making a save, and Isac Lundestrom scored into the open net to make it 3-1 at 2:44.
"Jones played well and we didn't give him any support," Boughner said. "We got away with sloppy play last game [a 3-2 win at the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday) and tonight, we didn't get away with it."
Anaheim extended the lead to 4-1 when Troy Terry's shot went off the skate of San Jose defenseman Radim Simek and deflected sideways to Deslauriers, who scored into the open net at 15:19.

Backes scored into an empty net at 12:47 of the third period for the 5-1 final. He was playing his second straight game after spending nine straight on the taxi squad.
"It's fun to see that, even if he's out of the lineup, when he comes back in, he still has the jump," Deslauriers said. "I'm really happy that he had that two-point game."
NOTES: Boughner said forward Logan Couture was "hobbling around the room a little bit" after blocking a shot with 3:40 remaining in the third period. He'll be re-evaluated Wednesday. Couture is second on the Sharks with 14 goals and 25 points. ... Sharks forward Marcus Sorensen (undisclosed) was a late scratch and was replaced by Noah Gregor, who was minus-2 in 9:52. ... San Jose defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic missed his first game of the season with an upper-body injury sustained in the first period of the win in Los Angeles on Saturday ... San Jose defenseman Christian Jaros had two hits and blocked two shots playing 11:41 in his season debut. He was acquired in a trade from the Ottawa Senators on Jan. 27. … Ducks defenseman Josh Manson had an assist for his 100th NHL point. … Anaheim scored on its only power-play opportunity but remains last in the NHL at 11.5 percent (10-for-87).
