Ducks at Red Wings | Recap

DETROIT -- Alex DeBrincat had two goals and an assist, and Patrick Kane had two assists to help the Detroit Red Wings defeat the Anaheim Ducks 6-3 at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday.

“We’ve emphasized work ethic and taking away the goalie’s eyes,” DeBrincat said. “I thought we did a good job of that.”

Kane reached 1,350 career points (494 goals, 856 assists), moving him past Mats Sundin for 31st place on the NHL all-time list. He is 25 points from passing Mike Modano for the most points by a U.S.-born player.

Anaheim forward Leo Carlsson’s point streak ended at 11 games (nine goals, 11 assists).

Moritz Seider, Dylan Larkin and Michael Rasmussen each had a goal and an assist for the Red Wings (10-7-0), who had lost three straight. Lucas Raymond and Jonatan Berggren each had two assists.

The Red Wings had three days off since a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, giving them a rare chance at back-to-back intense practices.

“It’s been miserable around the last few days, which it should be,” Detroit coach Todd McLellan said. “We expect more from each other, staff included, but this alleviates the misery for a night. We’ve got to get back on the ice tomorrow and make sure we remember the lessons we learned the last couple days.”

John Gibson made 15 saves on 17 shots against his former team before leaving the game after the second period. Cam Talbot stopped 10 of 11 shots in the third period.

“[Gibson] left with an upper-body issue,” McLellan said. “He’s going to be evaluated tonight and we’ll know tomorrow.”

Cutter Gauthier, Chris Kreider and Mikael Granlund scored for the Ducks (11-5-1), who lost their second straight following a seven-game winning streak. Lukas Dostal made 27 saves.

“We kept digging ourselves out of a hole, but then we would dig ourselves a deep hole,” Ducks coach Joel Quenneville said. “We had some self-inflicted mistakes on their goals; we have to clean that up.”

Granlund played his first game after missing the past eight with a lower-body injury sustained during a 4-3 loss at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Oct. 25. Ryan Strome, who assisted on Granlund’s goal, was making his season debut after sustaining an upper-body injury during the preseason.

“I thought Strome had a really good game -- he did a lot of good things,” Quenneville said. “[Granlund] had some nice shifts and a couple nice plays with the puck.”

Strome said he needed some time to get up to speed.

“You’re just trying to get your legs back when you’ve been off for a long time,” Strome said. “I can’t say enough about Frank (Vatrano) and Ross (Johnston) for helping me out when I needed it in the first couple of shifts.”

Seider scored on the power play to give Detroit a 1-0 lead at 5:57 of the second period.

Gauthier tied it 1-1 at 7:35 when Beckett Sennecke forced a turnover, then set him up to finish a 2-on-1 break.

Rasmussen gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead at 12:42, deking Jackson LaCombe before firing a wrist shot past Dostal’s glove.

“I thought [Rasmussen] played his best game of the season for a lot of reasons,” McLellan said. “He got the goal, but he also looked big and physical and he held on to the puck well.”

Kreider tied it 2-2 at 14:54, scoring on a wrist shot over Gibson’s glove from the right face-off circle, but Axel Sandin-Pellikka put the Red Wings ahead 3-2 at 15:33.

DeBrincat extended it to 4-2 at 50 seconds of the third period, tipping in Seider’s point shot.

“We’re a good team all around, but we needed some bounces,” Seider said. “That’s what happened tonight. We stuck to our structure and we simplified things on both ends of the ice.”

Granlund cut it to 4-3 at 4:33 after tipping in Ian Moore’s point shot before Larkin finished off a 2-man breakaway 33 seconds later to make it 5-3.

DeBrincat then scored an empty-net goal at 17:59 for the 6-3 final.
