One: 'Skate and Defend'

Earning two victories and four standings points against the Capitals and Hurricanes is bound to boost the output level of SEA players and coaches going into Florida for back-to-back games. Two outstanding games in net from Philipp Grubauer (he turned 30 on Thanksgiving Day) is perhaps even more energizing.
Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour talked about the Kraken after Wednesday morning skate: "They're a hard-working team with a consistent approach throughout the lineup. I'm sure they would like to see the goaltending be a little better. If that averaged out, I think you would see a few more wins."
Dave Hakstol, of course, liked what he saw from Grubauer: "The big thing is he is seeing the puck. He looks calm and settled."
The key element for Seattle's visit to Tampa Bay is a familiar one. The Kraken must stick to their system of what suddenly hot goal scorer Jared McCann calls "defense-first mentality." It's telling to hear the rally cry for defending from one of the Kraken's most offensively talented players.
Hakstol calls it "skate and defend." What needs to be done Friday, Saturday and every night:
+ Play fast with the puck, use your skating speed.
+ Keep shot attempts to the outside as much as possible; make sure the goalie has sightlines.
+ Forecheck consistently, both disrupting opponents' defensive zone exits and generating Kraken scoring chances by winning back the puck.
+ "Manage the puck well," says Hakstol, meaning fend off pressure from the other team.
+ If Tampa scores first, stick to the game plan, focus on preventing quality shots, block shots, establish puck possession in the neutral and offensive zones as a best type of defense.
+ Be patient, offense can be generated from the defense-first mentality.
+ Keep up the recent surge of team confidence and feeling comfortable in close games.

Two: Focus on Kraken

The new combinations of the four forward lines certainly clicked during the last two games of the homestand. But Calle Jarnkrok was unavailable for the third period Wednesday, ending the first time all season there was no Kraken player out with an injury.
Check back on our website and app for Friday updates on Jarnkrok, who scored his first goal of the season against Washington and added an assist playing with Jaden Schwartz and Yanni Gourde. Jarnkrok is a net presence on that line, as is Marcus Johansson for linemates Alex Wennberg and Jordan Eberle. Both players in the lineup was a welcome sight that SEA fans have to hope continues this weekend.
Speaking of power-forward types, Mason Appleton played a solid game in his first appearance since Oct. 26 against Montreal. If you watch the Johansson game-winning goal against Carolina (recommend the loop on our team Twitter account!), there's Appleton causing chaos in front of goaltender Frederik Andersen. More net-front chaos in the back-to-backs is vital.

Three: Know the Foe: Tampa Bay Lightning (11-4-3)

The Lightning lineup that has won back-to-back Stanley Cups is currently missing star scorer Nikita Kucherov and fellow goal-getter Brayden Point. Neither player will return for at least a dozen more games. Defenseman Erik Cernak has been out but could be back for Friday's matchup.
Also missing: The team's entire third line centered by Kraken fan fave Yanni Gourde, who no doubt will be even more fired up than usual (that's a high bar) to face his former team.
But TBL has stayed elite with scoring depth in the forward lines and the looming and talented presence of Andrei Vasilevsky in goal. On the watch list: Veteran Corey Perry scored his first goal of the season Tuesday (now playing for the Lightning after being on the losing side of Cup finals the last two seasons).
Plus, young forward Alex Barre-Boulet is playing top-six minutes for TBL due to injuries. He scored in Tuesday's win at Philadelphia on a highlight-reel shot. Kraken fans likely remember Barre-Boulet spent a week as a waiver pickup (Tampa Bay claimed him when SEA put him back on waivers) with Kraken early season when COVID-19 protocol unexpectedly reduced the opening night roster.
