POSTGAME | WPG 3, CAR 1 - F

POSTGAME | Laurent Brossoit

Little's goal - his first of the season - was the eventual game-winner with 2:09 left to go in regulation. But he was quick to say the Jets wouldn't have been in a position to win if it wasn't for Brossoit's performance.
"They came out really fast and really hard. They're a young, hungry team," said Little. "They had us on our heels for a bit. Thankfully LB played unbelievable. He kept us in the game and kept it close."
After firing 57 shots on goal the night before in Minnesota, the Hurricanes sent rubber toward Brossoit early and often in the first period. The Jets were outshot 18-6 in the opening 20 minutes, but none got by Brossoit.
His best in the opening frame came on a breakaway stop on Sebastian Aho, who scored the overtime winner for Carolina in Minnesota.
"I made a read that he was going to take a shot, and guess blocker, and that's where he shot," said Brossoit. "That's one of those saves that happens early and gets you in the game. That was nice."

POSTGAME | Bryan Little

The Jets started to generate chances of their own in the second, with Mark Scheifele hitting the post, Laine getting turned away by Petr Mrazek on a two-on-one with Little. Mrazek came up big against shortly after, stopping a Laine and Nikolaj Ehlers give-and-go with no defensive help.
But head coach Paul Maurice said the Jets were prepared for a difficult grind against the Hurricanes.
"You knew going into the game the puck wasn't going to get moved well or easily. They knock as many pucks down as any team I've seen," said Maurice.
"There will be things that we want to do better. But that game wasn't going to look like you would hope it would. It hasn't for any of their opponents."
The Jets would get another chance in the third, when shortly after hitting the post on Brossoit's stick side, Jordan Staal was called for holding.
On the ensuing power play, Josh Morrissey's point blast went wide, and came out to Blake Wheeler. The Jets captain froze Mrazek and quickly sent a pass cross-ice to Laine, who blasted home his second of the season giving the Jets a 1-0 lead.
"That's how we drew it up," said Morrissey with a laugh.
"Kyle passed it through the scrum and it came to me. I saw a bit of daylight and it kind of closed off in a hurry. I definitely didn't want to get it blocked. I tried to at least put it on that side of the net. But the puck gets in Wheels' hands, and he's able to find Patrik."

POSTGAME | Josh Morrissey

The lead was short lived though, as the Hurricanes solved Brossoit on their 36th shot of the game 3:39 later.
Aho's backhand pass to the slot found the stick of Dougie Hamilton, whose backhand went off the post and along the goal line behind Brossoit. Micheal Ferland was right there to knock it home, tying the game.
Chances went back-and-forth after that, until Morrissey took a neutral zone cross-ice pass from Little in transition. Skating up the left wing, Morrissey threaded a pass to Little joining the play late in the slot, and Little made no mistake.
"I saw quite a bit of net, but he almost got a glove on it," said Little. "Josh made a great pass - kind of opened up the seam and made a great pass right on my tape. So credit to him."

POSTGAME | Blake Wheeler

For the last two days, Laine, Little, and head coach Maurice had talked about the importance of that line (including Ehlers) providing more puck support for each other, as well as more sustained offensive zone time.
The head coach said that goal was exactly what doing those things can provide.
"Before the puck comes out of the zone, Patty does a real nice job hanging on the puck. We haven't had enough of that line just containing it," said Maurice.
"Nik comes over, we make a play, but now they're moving right because of their original position.
"Ehlers middle lane drives that. He doesn't open up into Bryan's space, so he creates that by a real simple, basic, drive to the net hard, not more fancy. Then that lane is open."
Connor would add an empty-netter with less than a second left in regulation to seal the win, which moved the Jets to 3-2-0, and opened a season-long six-game home stand on a winning note.
