FINAL

The New York Islanders closed out their preseason schedule with a 3-0-2 record after dropping a 5-4 overtime result to the New York Rangers on Saturday night at Webster Bank Arena.

Ilya Sorokin made 17 saves on 22 shots in the loss. Anders Lee scored twice for the Islanders - including once on the power play - while Mathew Barzal sent the game into overtime with his two-goal performance.

THE SCORING:
First Period:
3:03 - NYI 1, NYR 0 - Anders Lee opened the scoring with a clapper from the top of the left circle with assists coming from Andy Greene and Mathew Barzal.
17:22 - NYI 1, NYR 1, PPG - Vitali Kravtsov notched a power-play goal to put the Rangers on the board. The Russian winger buried a feed on the doorstep with assists on the play from Ryan Strome and Dryden Hunt.
Second Period:
0:39 - NYR 2, NYI 1 - Ryan Strome redirected a point shot from K'Andre Miller to give the Rangers their first lead of the game. Kaapo Kakko also picked up an assist.
Third Period:
2:06 - NYI 2, NYR 2 - Mathew Barzal tipped in Noah Dobson's point shot to tie the score up 2-2. Anders Lee also assisted on the play.
4:58 - NYR 3, NYI 2 - Filip Chytil beat Sorokin far side to reinstate the lead for the Rangers to 3-2. Dryden Hunt and Jarred Tinordi assisted on the play.
7:41 - NYI 3, NYR 3 PPG - Anders Lee scored his second goal of the game on the power play as he beat Georgiev from down low. Kyle Palmieri and Anthony Beauvillier earned assists.
10:17 - NYR 4, NYI 3 PPG - Filip Chytil scored his second goal of the game on the power play as he beat Sorokin with a one-timer from the slot. Alexis Lafreniere and Adam Fox picked up the assists.
19:10 - NYI 4, NYR 4 - With Ilya Sorokin pulled in exchange for an extra skater, Mathew Barzal scored his second goal of the game in the final minute of the period to send the game into overtime. Brock Nelson and Ryan Pulock recorded the assists on the play.
Overtime:
2:06 OT - NYR 5, NYI 4 - Filip Chytil scores the game winner - on the power play - to complete the preseason hat trick. Kaapo Kakko and Alexis Lafreniere picked up the assists.

SPECIAL TEAMS:
The Islanders went 1-for-3 on the power play.
The Islanders surrendered three power-play goals against the Rangers and finished the night 3-for-5 on the penalty kill. Coming into Saturday's contest, the Islanders had killed off 14-of-14 penalties.
GOALTENDING BATTLE:
Ilya Sorokin made 17 saves on 22 shots for the Islanders, while Alexandar Georgiev made 28 saves on 32 shots.
NOTEBOOK:
Andy Greene made his preseason debut and was paired with Scott Mayfield on defense… Anders Lee finished the night with three points (2G, 1A) and now has four points (3G, 1A) through two preseason games… Following his three-point (2G, 1A) outing against the Rangers, Mathew Barzal completed the preseason with five points (3G, 2A) through three games which ties him with Noah Dobson and Anthony Beauvillier for the scoring lead through the preseason… With the primary assist on Barzal's goal, Dobson earned his fifth point (1G, 4A) in three preseason games… Beauvillier's assist on Lee's PPG provided him with his fifth point (2G, 3A) in three preseason games… Rangers forward -- and former Islander -- Ryan Strome left the game after the second period and did not return.

The Islanders' preseason slate has officially come to an end and their next game won't be until Oct. 14 where they will take on the Carolina Hurricanes in their season opener. To start the 2021-22 campaign, the Islanders will embark on a 13-game road trip before unveiling their brand-new home at UBS Arena on Nov. 20 against the Calgary Flames.
